See Ya Real Soon: How to End Your Disney Vacation

The end of a Disney parks vacation can be tough with the whining, the tears, the “just one more ride!” bargaining.  And if that’s not enough, the kids may have a hard time with it too.  You’ve all had a great time, and it’s hard to say goodbye.

Have you ever tried to leave the parks after World of Color, Fantasmic, or the fireworks?  Everyone else in the world was leaving at the same time too, right?  That’s because those events have a definitive ending to them that help you feel like you’ve finished off your Disney day.  That’s one of the functions those shows serve for the parks.

Our Disney Parks vacations almost never end in the evening, so we’ve had to invent other ways to say goodbye to the Happiest Place on Earth.  In an effort to get every last moment of vacation we can, we usually cram in one last half day in the parks before we leave for the airport to catch an evening flight home.  We’ve developed a couple of techniques and rituals that help us say goodbye.

Wish to come back soon!

1. Visit the wishing well.

Disneyland has Snow White’s wishing well, and the Magic Kingdom in Disney World had Cinderella’s wishing well. In both cases, it’s a nice, calm location, rarely too crowded.  You can usually get one more picture, and everyone can make a wish to come back again soon.  It’s not as hard to leave if you remind yourself that you’ll be able to come again sometime.

2. Ride the train.

Jump aboard the railroad and take a trip around the entire park.  It’s a good way to see everything one more time, and it lasts long enough to let the idea of leaving sink in.

3. Ride the carousel.

The carousel is pretty both day and night, and the line is rarely prohibitive, even in the middle of the day.  You get the music, and you get nice views of Fantasyland.  Everyone’s a kid on a carousel.

4. Get one more treat.

Stop by the churro stand, the ice cream parlor, or the Candy Palace so everyone can pick out a fun treat.  Then find a bench and soak up the Disney atmosphere for a few more minutes before you leave.

5. Say goodbye in every direction.

We made this one up in desperation one afternoon when we needed some quick closure before heading to the airport. Now our kids insist that we need to do it before we leave each time.  We walk to the compass rose that’s in the center of the Esplanade between Disneyland and California Adventure.  We turn to the east and wave goodbye to the hotel (we usually stay across the street somewhere on Harbor.)  Then we turn to the west and wave goodbye to Downtown Disney.  Next we turn south to say goodbye to California Adventure, and finally north to Disneyland Park.  It takes about 10 seconds, and then we go.
