Why do we do a Down Day?

1. We’re physically tired.

A lot of our vacations, including the ones in Disney Parks, require a whole lotta walking.

2. We’re mentally tired.

Theme parks and city touring require a lot of thinking, planning, and pushing ourselves, plus there’s a lot of sensory stimulation.

3. It builds flexibility into the schedule

If someone gets sick or some plans don’t work out, we can shift things around. It’s really helped us sometimes.

What do we do on a Down Day?

What we do on a down day really varies depending on what type of vacation we are having.  We aim for it to be easy and different than what we have been doing.  Here are some typical elements to a Down Day:

 1. Sleep in.

Particularly since our kids have gotten older, they appreciate a day where we don’t set an alarm, and no one rushes them to get ready.

Sometimes you need to sleep in.

2. Do something different for meals.

On the Down Day of a recent Disneyland trip, we slept in and missed the window to get the hotel breakfast.  We walked down the street and had a wonderful breakfast at Mimi’s CafĂ© .  Since we’re on less of a schedule for Down Days, we sometimes go farther afield for other meals or find some fun take-out to bring back to the hotel.

3. Enjoy some pool time.

We don’t always take time to enjoy the pool, or we may only have a limited time for it on most days.  Extra swim time is a something we look forward to.

Extra pool time is often on our list for a Down Day.

4. Lounge around.

We read books, watch t.v., let the kids play games on phones, etc.

5. Venture out into the surrounding area.

Some trips are very focused on particular destinations and carefully planned itineraries, but it’s fun to just find a local park or frozen yogurt place.

Unstructured time can be the best.

6. Run Errands.

Often by this point in a trip, someone needs new flip-flops, or we’re running low on sunscreen.  On a Down Day we don’t mind taking care of those things.

7. Doing Laundry

Almost all hotels have guest laundry facilities along with vending machines for detergent. Planning to do laundry lets us pack a little lighter.

What about shorter trips?

We explored Griffith Park on a Down Day and got a good view of the Hollywood Sign.

Shorter trips don’t always have room for a whole Down Day, but we try to have some downtime in most days.  We take a midday break when we are at Disney Parks.  On other trips we may just declare a sleep-in morning or a free afternoon.

In general, we find that we enjoy the trip and each other more if we don’t try to pack every single moment with planned activities.

  1. When we do Disney World, we call the Down Say our Resort Day! It’s the time we take to explore our resort, maybe Disney Springs or another resort as well. It’s totally needed and sometimes does end up with some of the best memories.
