So What Are They For?
If you have your own luggage tags that you’ve made or bought, that’s fine, but you need these luggage tags too. They will help the crew get your luggage to your stateroom on embarkation day.
Disney Cruise line allows you to have two checked bags and one day bag per person. Your day bag will not need one of the Disney Cruise Line luggage tags because you will keep it with you the whole time until you get to your stateroom. Your two checked bags will be handed over to porters when you arrive at the cruise ship terminal. These get put into big bins and loaded onto the ship. From there, crew members have to get all the luggage to the correct staterooms. It’s a huge task, and the luggage tags are essential to getting everything to the right place.
When Do I Put them On?
In general, if you’ve made your own travel arrangements, you put them on right before you leave for the port on the morning of your cruise. There are a couple reasons to wait until then:
1. If you are flying, you don’t want your DCL luggage tags to get damaged or to confuse airport workers who might scan the wrong barcode.
2. It’s possible you might need to swap out luggage at the last minute. Maybe you’ll need a bigger suitcase, or your luggage might get damaged in transit. Once you’ve put a luggage tag on, it won’t be easy to switch it to another suitcase.
If you’ve made air and/or ground transportation arrangements through Disney you may receive different instructions. Read and follow them carefully.
How Do They Work?
1. The luggage tags come in sets of two that you separate into two long strips. You take the backing off, then loop the tag around the handle of your suitcase.
2. Press the two sticky sides together, securing the tag on your bag. It’s pretty easy, but I don’t recommend having kids do their own.
Why are there two names?
You’ll notice that there are two names on each tag. The first is the person whose name is first on the stateroom reservation. The second is the passenger the tags are meant for. Each passenger has their name on two luggage tags. It’s a good idea to put the correct tag on your bag, even if all the luggage is headed to the same stateroom. In the event that your luggage is lost or delayed, you’ll be able to tell the cruise line what name should be on the bag.
On the other hand, it doesn’t matter that much if you put someone else’s tag on your suitcase as long as they’re headed to the same stateroom or you don’t mind picking up your bag from the other stateroom. So for all you over-packers out there (Hi, guys, I’ll see you at the next support meeting!) that means you can tell your kid he has to pack in one bag, and you can take three just for you. You know, just theoretically.
But what if…?
What if you lose your tags, damage them, or need to switch suitcases after you’ve put your tag on a different one? Don’t panic. Just show up to the cruise ship terminal and don’t hand your untagged luggage to porters. Find the first DCL crew member you can and let them know that you don’t have luggage tags. This will be a little extra stress on your embarkation day, but they will be able to help you.

Getting any Disney mail is always super exciting, even if it’s just luggage tags! Once on the ship, I love watching them load the luggage if I’m on early enough and a few times we’ve spotted our own bags – which I think is fun.
That’s so true about the Disney Mail. I actually took that picture of the luggage in bins because we saw my parents’ suitcases down there. We have a video of us excitedly pointing and saying, “Look, that’s Grammy and Papa’s luggage down there!” as we boarded the ship.

We live in Canada , fly with Air Canada and have one night stop over at the Disney All Star Movie Resort before our Disney Cruise.My wife and I have two sets of luggage labels each. One set has her name and my name on it, the other set has her name on it twice (and not my name). Why do all four tags not have the same names on them?
What a good question! One some level, Disney has the stateroom in her name (probably she was just first in the list) and so her name appears on all the tags. The second name is the passenger the tags are for. When my son and I shared a stateroom, two luggage tags had my name twice, and two had my name and his name, which sounds just like your situation. Maybe you can convince her it means she has to carry all the suitcases. In any event, remember that you get to have an additional day bag for each of you that you carry on yourself.
