We have cruised out of Vancouver, British Columbia three times now. It’s within driving distance for us, so we don’t have to pay for airfare. That does mean, however, that we have to figure out what to do with our car and how we’ll get to the cruise ship terminal. On our most recent cruise, we just went ahead and used the cruise terminal parking at Canada Place in Vancouver. I doubt we’ll ever try anything else, because it was awesome!

Before The Cruise
A couple months before the cruise I booked our parking at the IndigoNeo website. The Canada Place cruise ship parking is lot 34. When I tried to book another reservation for my parents a few weeks later it said there were no reservations available. I was really bummed. Then I realized that I had put the departure time at 11:00 a.m. We’re off the ship way before that. I tried 9:30 a.m. and was able to make a reservation.
After the reservation was made, there were a few pages to print out, one of which had a QR code. This was important to have handy as we entered and left the parking garage. Next time we would know that it helps to pre-fold the paper around the code so that it’s easy to put it under the scanner.
I was a little nervous about whether we’d know where to go or if it would be too complicated. It turns out that it’s easier than I thought. You can get a look at the entrance ahead of time by using Google Maps. Search for Canada Place which is the large complex that contains the cruise ship terminal and the parking garage. Then use Street View and plop yourself down on Howe street headed northeast toward Canada Place. As you near Canada place you will see the entrance to the parking garage. Ta-dah! That’s where you’re headed.
Embarkation Day
When we drove down Howe Street, it looked just like it did on Google Street View. We followed the signs which you can see in the slideshow above. We scanned our QR code and picked a parking spot close to the elevators.
I may have mentioned a few times before that I love embarkation day on a cruise. What I don’t really love is the hassle of getting to the cruise ship terminal. As a family of 5, we can’t ride in one regular taxi together. Then when you get to the drop-off area you have to hurry to grab everything and leap out because there’s a line of taxis waiting behind you.
Parking in the garage was much easier and more relaxing. We all went together, the parking garage wasn’t very busy, and we had all the time we needed to fuss around and get all our luggage together. This is probably not a big deal if it’s just adults traveling, but if you have kids, it’s real.
We didn’t need a luggage cart, so I didn’t think to check if any were available. After taking the elevator down to the level marked for the cruise ship terminal, we quickly saw the area where we could hand off our luggage. Then we followed signs to the check in area. Easy!
Disembarkation Day
As much as I love Embarkation Day, I equally loathe Disembarkation Day. You’re already depressed that your cruise is over. To add insult to injury, it takes forever to get off and get out. To speed things up, we now opt for the Express Walk-Off on our cruises. At Canada Place, we were among the first 30 or so people off the ship. We wheeled the luggage through customs and then found ourselves right next to an elevator. We took took it up to the parking level, and we were right by our van.
Following the signs, we drove to the scanner. Since we had prepaid, we scanned, and we were done. We drove up onto the surface streets and headed south. It was so fast! No waiting for luggage carts. No waiting for a porter. No waiting for a taxi. No claiming our vehicle and transferring luggage. We were literally at the border crossing for the U.S. while other people were still waiting to get off the ship and get transportation. The combination of Express Walk-Off and parking at IndigoNeo at Canada Place had us home at least two hours faster than on previous trips.
Other Considerations
Cruise parking at Indigo Parking Canada Place in Vancouver can accommodate cars up to 6 feet, 9 inches tall. The cost is about $25 Canadian per day. With taxes and fees, this ended up being about $275 for a week-long cruise. At time of writing, that was around $206 American. That’s not nothing of course. There are several other options for people who are driving.
Other Options For Cruise Parking in Vancouver
1. Stay at a hotel the night before that allows you to leave your car for a fee or as part of the hotel cost. These are often called park and fly or park and cruise rates. You then take a hotel shuttle if it’s available, use public transportation, or use a taxi or ride share. Unless you have a free hotel shuttle, you’re paying for transportation both ways. Since we always need two taxis, this adds up for us too.
2. Park at the Vancouver Airport. They don’t check to see if you’re flying. Park in long-term parking, then take the Sky Train or go to the main terminal and get a taxi or ride share. Again, this isn’t free, though if you prebook, it should be about half the cost of parking at the cruise terminal. You’ll also pay for transportation both ways. I seriously considered the Sky Train option. However, when I used the Google Street View at the Waterfront station where we’d get off, I immediately abandoned the idea. It was a lot farther to walk than I was prepared to go with 5 people and all the luggage.
If you’re not driving into Vancouver, it’s probably not worth paying for a rental car to sit at Canada Place for the length of your cruise, so you will probably just pick one of the above options or arrange ground transfers through your cruise line. That can be expensive too and may involve waiting around for a shuttle bus.
