Express Walk-Off On Your Disney Cruise–Should You?

Debarkation day on your Disney Cruise is just the worst.  It’s not anything the crew is doing wrong.  On the contrary, the problem is they’ve done such a fabulous job for the whole cruise, and now you’ve been ruined for everyday life.  You feel like Cinderella must have, limping home from the palace in one shoe, returning to the drudgery of everyday life after experiencing the splendors of the ball.  It’s that bad. And that’s why we now choose Express Walk-Off on a Disney Cruise.

Unlike Cinderella, you’ve got some choices about how you return to everyday life.  You can follow the regular debarkation process, or you can use Express Walk-Off.  In essence, Express Walk-Off lets you get off the ship sooner but doesn’t give you help with your luggage.  Let’s break it down a bit more.

Regular Debarkation

If you are following the regular debarkation process, you have work to do on the last evening of your cruise.  You need to pack up everything except what you will need for that night and the following day.  You attach special luggage tags that your stateroom attendant has left for you and leave your bags in the hall.  This is generally done in a last minute rush since you probably left it until late and are eager to get to dinner or that night’s entertainment.  The likelihood of forgetting to leave yourself shoes for the next day is on the high side.

Express Walk-Off

If, instead, you want to do Express Walk-Off, you just let your stateroom attendant know your intentions so they don’t fret. Head out for your last evening aboard, and pack at your leisure.

No one gets to sleep in on debarkation day.  No one.  It’s particularly painful for those who made the most of their final night on the ship.  If you had first seating for dinner during the cruise you are doomed to something like a 7:15 breakfast time or sometimes even 6:30, depending on your itinerary.

Guests who had the second seating are assigned to a slightly more civilized time like 8:00 or 8:30.  Your servers valiantly try to be chipper, but you will eat your Eggs Benedict and Mickey Waffles with a sullen expression and a gloomy heart.  If you are doing Express Walk-Off (or you just want to skip the other breakfast) Cabanas will generally be open for breakfast as well as the Cove Cafe.  This is usually a faster option since you can just grab something rather than go through the process of ordering.  They don’t always include the information about Cabanas on the debarkation guide, but check your Navigator App .

Regular Debarkation

After breakfast, those doing the regular debarkation process have some time to kill.  You need to be out of your stateroom, so you’ve got your carry-on bags with you. Nothing is really open, so you end up sitting around.  Chairs in the Promenade Lounge are in high demand as you wait for your debarkation group to be called.  Once it’s called, you get in a long line to slowly shuffle off the boat.  Once you are off the boat, you need to go through customs, find your luggage in baggage claim, and get in long lines for taxis or shuttles.

Express Walk-Off

If you have opted for Express Walk-Off to end your Disney Cruise, you will want to line up in the lobby about 15-30 minutes prior to the expected debarkation time which will be listed in the debarkation guide left for you in your stateroom.  It’s likely to be about 8:15 but can vary from cruise to cruise.  You will have all of your luggage with you.  The line for Express Walk-Off has always been significantly shorter than the lines we have waited in for regular debarkation.

Once the boat has gotten permission to unload, the line begins to move.  You have your Key To The World Card scanned one last time, and you get off.  Since the people in Express Walk-Off are in the first group to get off the ship, lines are generally shorter for customs as well as for porters and transportation.  When we did this is San Diego, it was only about 10 minutes from the time we were scanning our Key To The World Cards until we were loading up in a shuttle for the airport.  In Vancouver, we were in the car in about 5 minutes after the Express Walk-Off line began to move.  Previously, we had used the regular debarkation procedure for two cruises that ended in Vancouver B.C., and that involved a lot more waiting around.

But consider…

So who shouldn’t do Express Walk-Off?  Don’t do the Express Walk-Off if your party can’t (or doesn’t want to) haul all their own luggage off the ship. When our kids were little, we wouldn’t have been able to make that work.  You have to get off the ship and all the way through customs on your own with all your stuff.  In addition, you must be within your customs allowance and not owe any duty.  Some people also value having that last sit-down meal and a chance to say goodbye to their servers on the final morning.

Our verdict:

For us, Express Walk-Off is the best way to end a great Disney Cruise. Our kids are old enough to carry their own luggage. Customs isn’t really an issue because we don’t buy a lot in souvenirs. We can just get off the ship without torturing ourselves looking longly around at a ship we love that we have to leave.
