Pike Place Market in Seattle

We’ve been to Pike Place Market in Seattle many times over the years, and while we have our favorite stops, there’s always something new to see.  Basically, if you go to Pike Place, you should be prepared to snack, explore, and, of course, take a few pictures.

If we’re still feeling like a little breakfast, we stop at Daily Dozen for some doughnuts holes.  I recommend whatever is hot right that minute.  Ellenos Real Greek Yogurt can also count as breakfast.  From there we often stroll down toward Post Alley.  You will pass the Starbucks on your way, and there will likely be a very long line to get in.  Unfortunately, it isn’t the first Starbucks as many think.  A plaque on the wall explains that, but it’s still a popular tourist spot.

Post Alley is full of great food.  It’s home to the award-winning Pike Place Chowder that has lines to rival the Starbucks.  To get the chowder without the wait, check out our previous article.  It’s also home to the Lo Priore Pasta bar which has great pizza and pasta.

From there we often cross the street to the market stalls where you can find fresh seafood, gorgeous bouquets of flowers, farm-fresh produce, and a variety of crafts and souvenirs.  I also have a weakness for Chukar Cherries.  The dark chocolate Cabernet Cherries are excellent, and if we’re too full to even think of eating more, we take them home.

At this point, we’re generally ready to explore the rabbit warren of shops in the floors below street level.  There are import stores, second-hand shops, a record store, a book shop, and many more.  Magic buffs may even have heard of the Market Magic Shop.  Golden Age Collectibles is a mecca for fans of fantasy, sci-fi, and pop culture.

Pictures

Be sure to get a picture of the sign.

The first picture many people want is the iconic Public Market Center sign.  Then, there’s the gum wall which is actually more of an alley at this point.  Whatever you think of it (I won’t comment) it’s a popular picture spot.  As you face the Public Market sign, it’s down the ramp to your left.  Other popular pictures are the Pike Place Pig statue and the flying fish at the Pike Place Fish Market.  As you explore further you might even find the community garden which has lovely views of the Seattle Wheel.
