Reluctant Disney Cruisers

Sometimes even great people are reluctant Disney Cruisers. Maybe you’re not sure if it’s for you. Maybe you’re all in, but someone else in your group is not on board (sorry.) Before you let your cruise dreams sail away (sorry again) consider these common reasons for Disney Cruise reluctance.

I’m not a cruise person.

We can’t wait to get back on board.

Perhaps the reason a person says this is that they can’t really picture themselves on a cruise vacation. They may have images of the stereotypical party boat with lots of drinking and loud music by the pool. Conversely, they may be picturing a ship geared toward the elderly with sedentary activities and no nightlife.

The antidote to these concerns is a bit of knowledge. Try watching some Disney Cruise videos. Official ones are good, but YouTube is also full of people eager to share their own Disney Cruises. Some of them were reluctant Disney Cruisers at the start too. You’ll see people of every age on board, and Disney plans for all of them. You can sit and play bingo, hit the waterslide, or attend a wine tasting. Most people find that they don’t have enough time to get around to everything they want to do on board.

Cruises are too expensive.

Yep. Cruises are expensive. However, it helps to remember that a cruise is your transportation, hotel, meals, and entertainment in one price. There may be some additional costs such as transportation to the port, excursions you choose, and adult beverages, but once you’re on a Disney Cruise ship, the basics are covered. You can find more information about what isn’t included here.

Disney Cruises are more expensive.

Disney Cruise Line consistently gets high ratings and wins awards for things like cleanliness, entertainment, kids’ clubs, environmental friendliness, and their private island. They aren’t cheap because they’re giving you a lot. In the same way, a swanky resort costs more than a roadside motel.

Personally, I’d rather go on a Disney Cruise every few years than go on a less expensive one more often. I’m also willing to economize in other areas of my life so that we can afford it. However, if a Disney Cruise really isn’t in your budget, then there are certainly other fun ways to vacation.

There’ll be kids everywhere/ It’ll be “too Disney.”

The Quiet Cove Pool: Adults Only

Not everywhere. Significant parts of the ship are reserved for adults only, and these areas look more adult. They don’t have much overt Disney theming and stick with the classic 1930’s Ocean Liner aesthetic of the Disney Cruise Line. These adult areas include the spa, fitness center, the Quiet Cove pool area, the Palo and Remi restaurants, and the adult nightlife areas on each ship. If you want an adult retreat, you can have it.

I’ll get seasick.

Take this one seriously, but don’t necessarily view it an insurmountable barrier. I didn’t get seasick at all on my first two Disney Cruises, and then when we hit rolling seas I discovered the power of Dramamine. It works great for me at a low enough dosage I don’t even get sleepy. Other folks swear by remedies such as utilizing pressure points or other over-the-counter medications. For people with a history of intense motion sickness, there’s even a prescription patch you can discuss with your doctor.

In addition to medical interventions, your choice of stateroom makes a difference. Some folks are fine as long as their stateroom has a view so they can look out. Time on deck has the same benefit.

The part of the ship you choose effects the amount of movement you experience. Most people agree that a lower area toward the center of the ship has less movement. Some people like low and towards the rear. Interestingly, these staterooms tend to be less expensive too. So, win-win.

I’ve already been to the Bahamas./It’ll be too hot.

If you’re all “beached out,” take a cruise to somewhere else.

It’s true that Disney Cruise ships spend a lot of time in the Bahamas and the Caribbean. They also sail to Alaska, the Pacific Coast, Hawaii, Canada, Europe, and even Australia now. I’m hoping they add some other interesting destinations as they get their new cruise ships also. There are a lot of destinations to choose from, and some of them have cooler temperatures if that’s what you’re after.

I don’t want to dress up.

There are multiple food options poolside.

So don’t. In all the main dining areas, cruise casual wear is acceptable, even if your cruise has a dress-up or formal night. A nice-ish shirt and shorts is fine even on formal night. If you don’t want to change out of your swimsuit, just eat at one of the on-deck areas you’ll find near the pools or order room service. Find Disney’s dining attire guidelines here.
