Brunch at Palo: Updated

There’s no doubt that a Disney Cruise is an extravagant treat all on its own, but if you’re looking for more extravagance and even more treats, I definitely suggest having brunch at Palo.  It’s one of our must-do’s on every single cruise.

What is it?

Brunch at Palo, Disney Cruise
We walk by Palo the first afternoon on the cruise and dream about what we’re going to eat.

Palo is an Italian, adults-only restaurant that you can find on each of the Disney cruise ships.  They serve both brunch and dinner. However, we enjoy having family dinner in the main dining locations so much that we just do brunch at Palo. On the Wish, this is the Palo Steakhouse.

Previously, Palo had both a menu and an epic buffet of delicious treats. Both options were included and unlimited. On our most recent trip, the buffet option had been eliminated. This was probably due to Covid, though the buffet was back at Cabanas. We were disappointed at first, but the menu had been expanded to include many of the foods previously found at the buffet. For a look at the former buffet in all its glory, check out the slideshow at the bottom of the article.

The Food

To begin, you are offered one complimentary adult beverage, either a mimosa or sparkling wine.  You can order more at an additional charge, with other drinks available as well.

For starters you can choose an antipasto plate. Basically, you can pick the one with seafood or the one without which has meats and cheeses. These plates have been added to take the place of some of the most popular parts of the buffet. One plate is probably enough to share between two people, but it’s all included, so order all you’d like. Soups are available as well.

The menu then offers breakfast dishes like waffles, pancakes, and egg dishes such as Eggs Benedict, omelets, and frittatas. From my perspective, the waffles and pancakes aren’t special enough to take up room in your stomach for this meal.

The next natural progression is to flatbread pizzas and calzones. These are also very good, and certainly the best pizza available on the ship. Ordering one to share at your table is probably a good call. Again, you don’t want to fill up too soon.

Next you have the entrees, which are a selection of Italian classics like parmesan crusted chicken breast, lasagna, veal saltimbocca, fish, steak, and other pasta dishes. I can personally recommend the parmesan chicken and the lasagna.

At last we have desserts. There will be a nice selection of both types of desserts–chocolate and everything else. Feel free to order several.

Is It Worth It?

While we still think Palo brunch is worth the extra cost, it was more worth it when they had the buffet. They still have excellent service, excellent food, and you will likely eat a ridiculously large amount. We hope the buffet portion will return soon.

The Nitty-Gritty

Brunch at Palo is currently $45 per person plus gratuities.  It’s not that it is a $45 brunch. It’s definitely more than that.  Disney has already figured regular meals into your cruise price, so the $45 is just in addition to that.

Usually brunch at Palo is only available on at-sea days.  If you want to have brunch, you should attempt to make your reservation as soon as you do online check-in for the cruise.  If one isn’t immediately available, keep trying.  I was very disappointed I couldn’t get any reservation for Palo when I checked in for a previous cruise, but I tried again the next morning and was able to score at noon reservation.  If that doesn’t work, try to make a reservation as soon as you are on board.  Alas, you cannot make two online reservations for Palo brunch at this time.  If you are particularly hedonistic (no judgement) you can make a reservation online, then try to make a second reservation once you are on board.

Strategy For Parents

As I mentioned earlier, only those 18 and older may dine at Palo.  So what do you do if you have kids along?  Ditch ’em.  Kids who are old enough can be at one of the kids’ clubs, or you can make reservations at the nursery for smaller folk.  If your kids haven’t been on a Disney cruise before, you probably don’t want your reservation to be at the beginning of the cruise because they might not be comfortable on their own in the clubs yet.

The Dress Code

Palo and Palo Steakhouse do have a dress code: Adult-exclusive restaurants aboard Disney Cruise Line ships are elegant dining experiences. Guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s sophistication. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended. Dress casual attire with a polished look is permitted (such as dress pants, jeans in good condition, collared shirts and blouses and lifestyle shoes). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire is not permitted. If you are on a cruise with a  formal or semi-formal night, you can easily wear whatever you brought for that.

A Final Thought

Celebration at Palo.

If you are traveling with someone celebrating a special occasion, treating them to Palo is a great way to help them celebrate.  Let your server know, and they will quietly and tastefully acknowledge the occasion–no clapping, singing, or silly hats.  A brunch at Palo is also a great way to thank someone who brought you on the cruise.
