Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites Near the Disneyland Resort

We’ve stayed at the Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites several times because it works well for us.  To begin with, the Desert Inn is one of the hotels located near the crosswalk on Harbor that takes you into the shuttle bus drop off area outside the parks.  The Disneyland Hotel itself is a longer walk from the parks than the Desert Inn and Suites.  If you’ve ever been to the parks before, you know that you are already tired at the point that you decide to leave at the end of a long day.  You want the shortest commute possible back to your hotel.  Since we can’t cough up the big bucks for Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel which is the absolute closest, we generally opt for one of the hotels on Harbor.

For Larger Groups

Another plus of the hotel is that it can accommodate more than 4 people in a room.  On a previous trip we stayed in a B1 Family suite that can sleep up to 8 people. It was basically just two adjoining rooms, so we had four queen beds and, more importantly, two bathrooms.  There are even rooms for up to 1o people.  On this stay we wanted to spend a little less money, so we stayed in the Parlor Suite for our 7 night stay.  We booked directly through their website.

The Parlor Suite

  • Sink and vanity area at the Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites
  • Bathroom at the Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites

The parlor suite sleeps up to 6 guests. As you enter, there is a small room with the fold-out couch, t.v., dresser, microwave, and a mini fridge. We gave this area to the girls who liked having their own space with a door they could close for privacy. This also made it easier for them to go to sleep at night when the rest of us weren’t settled in yet. The main room had two queen beds, a dresser, hanging area, t.v., a desk, and a vanity and sink area. The bathroom was adjacent.

Interestingly, there was no closet but just an open, hanging area. While it might not be the look you’d want in your own home, it was more convenient because nothing was behind the closet door or hard to reach. Overall, the layout was practical, and we had enough storage for our stuff. The beds were comfortable, and we didn’t have trouble with noise other than the fact that we heard the fireworks every evening.

We happened to be visiting during a heat wave that set several all-time records in the area.  Because of this, I can attest to the fact that the rooms have good air conditioning. Our room stayed a pleasant temperature the whole time. There was even a small fan to push the air conditioning into the little parlor room, but it was a little loud so it was sometimes easier just to leave the doors open between the two rooms.  Because of the heat, we also spend more time in the room midday, watching t.v., and there was a good selection of channels to watch including HBO and Disney.  The free WiFi was pretty slow at times.

The Pool

The hotel has an indoor pool and hot tub. This has been lovely during some of our stays, but for this trip, it wasn’t so fun.  On the hot days, the water was just too warm to enjoy, and sitting in the pool area to watch the kids swim was hot and very humid.  Other than that, it was a decent pool area, and we didn’t  have to worry about sunscreen for the kids. Pool towels are available from the front desk.

Hotel Setup

Like many of the hotels on Harbor, the Desert Inn is a long, narrow strip of land. Some of the rooms are set way back from the street. The hotel is three stories high in some places, and five in others. The elevator nearest the lobby only goes to the third floor which is worth knowing if you are trying to take your luggage up to a higher floor.  Another elevator is available further along.  Most of the time when we came back to the room it was fastest to just use the near elevator and take the stairs up one floor to our room.  Our room was nearer to the street and actually had a view of Disneyland out the back window.

Breakfast

  • Suite rolls and other breakfast items at the Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites.

The hotel serves a complimentary continental breakfast. There are sweet rolls, muffins, bread to toast, cold cereal, instant oatmeal, fruit, and hard boiled eggs.  Beverages include coffee, tea, milk, and juice. It’s fairly minimal, but the area was always clean and well-stocked when we were there, and we always found a table. Breakfast is available from 7 to 9:30.

Parking

A limited amount of self-parking is available for a fee, and if that’s not available, you can use the valet parking for the underground garage, also for a fee.  Coin operated laundry facilities are available for guests which is great for longer stays. The hotel also has a rooftop deck area where you can watch the Disneyland fireworks at night.

Our Stay

Other than the fact that I demagnetized my keycard three times (okay maybe four) we had an uneventful stay.  The staff were all courteous (they didn’t even laugh at me about the keycard) the room was clean and convenient, and we were able to load up on some carbs and caffeine on our way to the parks.  The Anaheim Desert Inn and Suites isn’t a particularly fancy place, but it’s close, competitively priced, and it works for our family of 5. I usually book our stay directly through their website.
