Who can use it?
Right now, this Visitor Toll Pass is only available to people renting cars from Orlando’s MCO airport. It’s possible that the service may expand in the future, so it’s worth checking if you fly into another airport.
How does the Florida Visitor Toll Pass work?
Basically, you will get a special pass to hang from your rearview mirror. You will not need to stop at tollbooths on your trip, and you will automatically get the lowest rates for any tolls you incur. At the end of the trip you turn in the pass.
What do I do?
1. For the smoothest experience, download the Visitor Toll Pass app ahead of time. Set up your account in the app including your method of payment and dates of your trip.
2. Reserve a car with one of the rental car agencies listed on the Visitor Toll Pass faq page.
3. When you arrive at MCO you proceed to the area with the rental car agency counters. If you’re used to going straight to the garage for express pick up, this will be a short detour for you. Look for signs that point you to the Visitor Toll Pass vending machine. Scan the barcode generated in the app, and the machine will give you a pass. (If you have any trouble getting it to scan, try turning up the brightness on your phone.) At this point the app will charge you a $10 refundable fee.
4. Do not get your rental car agency’s toll system. You don’t need it with the Visitor Toll Pass.
5. As soon as you get in your rental car, hang the Visitor Toll Pass from the rearview mirror. It must be hung up before your leave the garage because that’s how it will be scanned and activated. Check the app to verify your activation status if you wish.
6. During your whole trip you can drive in any toll lane with no need to stop. You can also look in the app to see when tolls were charged and how much they were.
7. When you return to the airport, drop your toll pass in one of the drop boxes. You will pretty much have to pass one as you go from the rental car garage to either terminal A or B. They look like a U.S. mailbox but purple, and they are clearly labeled. If you forget to return your toll pass, you don’t get the $10 deposit back, but you still get the lowest rates on all your tolls.
How it worked for us
I set up my account ahead of time with no problems. When we arrived at the airport from our redeye flight I was not especially clear-headed, and I was a little stressed about finding the Visitor Toll Pass machine. I shouldn’t have worried. It was right there across from the rental car counters, just past one of the baggage returns. We scanned the barcode, and the machine gave us the tag. We hung the pass up as soon as we got in the car. When we left the garage I checked the app and saw that the pass had been activated. I checked every few days to see our tolls. At one point I noticed that I’d put the dates of our trip in wrong and was able to modify it in the app so that the pass didn’t shut off early.
We drove from MCO to our hotel and back and all around Orlando. We drove out to Kennedy Space Center and back. In all, we were charged for tolls 11 times and spent a total of $13.82.
When we got to the airport we found the drop box with no problem. When I checked the next day it showed that our pass had been returned.
Is it a good deal?
Heck, yeah. We spent $13.82 in total for tolls, and the Visitor Toll Pass cost us nothing. Rental Car Agencies charge anywhere from $3 to $30 a day to use their transponders, and that doesn’t include the tolls themselves. With the Visitor Toll Pass, you only pay for the actual tolls. If you use the pass and return it without driving on any toll roads you don’t have any cost as long as you return the pass at the end. If you forget to return it, you will only be out $10.
The only downside to using the Visitor Toll Pass is that you have to be a little on top of it. You need to set up your account, find the kiosk, hang up the pass, and return it at the end.
Our Verdict
The Florida Visitor Toll Pass worked out great and saved us money. We would definitely use this again if we flew into MCO and rented a car. If you change cars outside of the airport, there’s a place in the app to update your license plate. I was thinking that might be useful for us if we rented a car both before and after a cruise since we would drive from MCO to the port, then drive from the port to MCO in a different car. I guess I’ll just have to take a cruise to test that out!

This is great information! I had seen the toll pass machines in the past but had no idea how it all worked. I’ll have to give it a try on our next trip to Orlando. Thanks! -Andrea
It worked great for us!
I noticed in the app that the kiosk for the Florida Toll Pass is only located in Terminal A, but I am flying into Terminal B. Does this mean I would not pass the kiosk when I go to baggage claim?
Unfortunately, I think you are correct.
