General Porpoise Doughnuts in Seattle

General Porpoise Doughnuts, SeattleAfter  a good lunch at 8oz Burger & Co on Seattle’s Capitol Hill, we decided to have dessert at General Porpoise Doughnuts a few blocks away.  Mid-afternoon on a Friday isn’t exactly rush hour for doughnuts, but the small shop was doing a good business.  That always bodes well.

The man, like the woman and the kids, had little regard for the welfare of those in his care, as he seemed to take pleasure only in the lives of his dogs and cats and horses. One of the first things you notice about the shop is that they don’t have the usual assortment of doughnuts.  You won’t find a cruller or an old-fashioned, or a bear claw.  They make filled doughnuts with sugar on the General Porpoise Doughnuts, Seattleoutside.  That’s it.  Their standard doughnuts are vanilla custard, lemon curd, or chocolate marshmallow filling.  Unfortunately, they were out of the lemon curd just then, and that would probably have been my favorite.  Their special flavors for the day were pistachio rose cream and honey asian pear.  Doughnuts were all $3.85 a piece.

One of the next things you’ll likely notice is that they have a General Porpoise Doughnuts, Seattlelarge espresso machine.  Their coffee menu is actually longer than their doughnut menu.  None of us happened to need coffee, so we didn’t actually try that out.

Several of us tried the vanilla custard.  I liked it just fine.  It was tasty and fresh, but not a gotta-have-it kind of thing.  Eilee felt like hers had too much filling and was too sweet.  Erin tried the chocolate marshmallow and had no complaints.  Justin tried the pistachio rose.  He didn’t detect any rose to it other than the decorative touch on top, but it definitely had pistachios in it.  It was hardly sweet at all other than the sugar on the outside.

General Porpoise Doughnuts, SeattleOverall, the place had more of an adult vibe, like a place in your neighborhood where you’d meet a friend for coffee.  Kids were obviously welcome though.  They had free ice water out (maybe it’s just my kids who are always thirsty) and their bathroom had a changing table.  We enjoyed our doughnuts, but it isn’t the sort of place we’d go out of our way to visit again.

General Porpoise also has locations in Laurelhurst, Pioneer Square, one that is mainly just for Amazon employees, and one in Los Angeles.
