To begin with, the park wasn’t really quite ready to open.  Famously, Walt had to decide between getting the drinking fountains plumbed or the bathrooms.  Wisely, he decided that bathrooms were a priority.  As the park was opening, there was still wet paint in places, and the freshly poured asphalt was still so sticky in the heat that women’s high heels got stuck in it.

Landscaping hadn’t been finished everywhere either, including in the Storybook Land Canal boats which were then called Canal Boats of the World.  The story goes that when they couldn’t get the weeding done in time, cast members stuck signs with latin names in front of the weeds and called it good.

Opening Day Issues

Disneyland turns 65

Opening day was meant to be a smaller event for the press, Disney employees, and special guests.  However, thousands of counterfeit tickets brought in way more guests than expected.  The flood of guests utterly overwhelmed attractions and concessions.  Rides broke down left and right, and restaurants ran out of food. In addition, a gas leak in Fantasyland temporarily shut down several lands and nearly set the castle on fire.

The live broadcast on ABC glossed over many of these issues, but it had its own problems too.  There were missed cues, guests tripping over camera cords, and even one announcer who didn’t realize he was on camera while making out with a dancer.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, Disneyland
Mr. Toad’s Wild Road was one of the original rides at Disneyland.

While a lot of changes have come and gone at Disneyland, the attractions that opened that first day remain some of the most popular in the park. These includes Autopia, The Jungle Cruise, Peter Pan, The Mark Twain, Storybook Land Canal Boats, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, the Mad Tea Party, the Disneyland Railroad, and more.

While it may have had a rocky start, Walt’s idea of a place where families could have fun together was a game-changer.  Over 16 million people visit Walt’s first park each year. Even if you can’t visit the park on July 17th for Disneyland’s 67th birthday, I know Mickey hopes to see you all again real soon.

  1. So amazing that Disneyland is turning 65! Loved reading about the announcer on ABC who didn’t realize that he was still on the air. That must have been some interview with the dancer! Enjoyed reading your blogpost – Neek
