Midday Break At Disney

We are huge DisneyParks fans, but in the early afternoon you will generally find us heading back to the hotel. Why? Our Disney Park day goes so much better when we have a midday break.

What’s a midday break?

A midday break is when you leave the park and head back to the hotel for a nap, rest, swim, or just time in the air conditioning. We also change out of t-shirts that got soaked on Splash Mountain and switch up which shoes we’re wearing to avoid blisters.

Why is it awesome?

A midday break from the Disney parks in awesome because you are avoiding the hottest, most crowded part of the day. You’re also recharging so that you can finish the day strong.

But aren’t you getting less time in the park?

No. Yes. Maybe.

Here’s the thing. The kids–okay, maybe it’s the adults too– have limited stamina. We get hot, tired, cranky, and our feet hurt. That’s not too magical. We would burn out pretty fast if we tried to do full days, and we wouldn’t enjoy it.

Evening in the parks is magical–if you’re not already exhausted.

When we head back into the park for the evening we see hundreds of sunburned, cranky people streaming out of the parks for the day because they have just had it. They are leaving right as the temperatures are dropping into a pleasant range and right as the crowds are dropping also. We’re excited and ready to roll. We can’t wait to see the little lights in the trees on Main Street. We’re ready to watch the fireworks and ride Big Thunder in the dark.

But–all the way back to the hotel?

It’s true that it’s easier if your hotel is nearby. When we’re at the Disneyland Resort, we often stay on Harbor Boulevard, as close to the crosswalk as possible. In Walt Disney World, we try to stay onsite when we can. Even when we’re a little further away though, we often still take the time for a break.

Every single day?

Okay, you got me. There are times we don’t take an out-of-the-park break. On the day we arrive at the resort, our hotel room usually isn’t available until later in the day, so we head stash the luggage and spend the remainder of the day in the park. If we’ve already checked out of the hotel, then we can’t head back either. If we’ve somehow only got one day in the parks, then we would stick it out too.

What then? Well, we just take an in-park, midday break. This is just a watered down version of our usual break. We look for a restaurant with shade or good air conditioning and spend half an hour nursing a cold drink and letting the kids dink around on phones. Sometime we find attractions like the Enchanted Tiki Room that have a short wait and a long sit in the air conditioning. We head to places like Tom Sawyer’s Island or the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail that have shade and benches.

Along with making Rope Drop and using Genie+, the midday break is a strategy that helps us get the most from our Disney day.

  1. Wow, I have never been to the park. But I really wish to someday. Reading your personal experiences has given me quite a perspective on what things I should expect and how to be prepared for them. Thanks a lot.
