Archie McPhee in Wallingford

When they first visited Archie McPhee in the Wallingford neighborhood of Seattle, one of my daughters said, “This place is awesome!”  The other said, “This place is completely pointless.”  I can kind of see both points.  It sort of depends how awesome you find bacon apparel, novelty bandages, and rubber chickens.

It is considered a common condition in women over the age of 30; it seems to be more prevalent in women and usually affects the scalp, though some patients' first symptoms are noticed on the face, in particular on the nose and on the chin. So What Is It?

Bacon merchandise in a coffin display case.

Archie McPhee primarily sells toys and novelties.  For example, there is a full size coffin display case full of bacon-themed products like a bacon scarf, a bacon game, and bacon-flavored toothpaste.  Why is it in a coffin display case?  I don’t think it’s meant as commentary on the unhealthy aspects of bacon or even the use of animals as food.  I think it’s just the sort of place where they have coffin-shaped display cases, so why not use one for a bacon display?  It’s also the sort of place where you can find underpants for your hand, hula hoops, kazoos, and tin foil hats.

Just when you think you’ve got a handle on the place, you find items you weren’t expecting at all.  A casual perusal also found gold panning gloves (waterproof and insulated), craft items, costumes, and party supplies.  If you need a piñata, a clown wig, party prizes, or cake toppers, Archie McPhee is the place.

And What Else?

The Rubber Chicken Museum, Archie McPhee

Archie McPhee isn’t content just to be a retail location.  They collect and display the weird and unexpected.  The store  includes the Rubber Chicken Museum (don’t worry, it only takes 30 seconds to tour) the World’s largest rubber chicken, and the Wallingford Beast.  The Wallingford Beast is a taxidermy nightmare trying to become an urban legend.  All I can say is it’s not for the faint of heart.

Kid Factor

The word's largest rubber chicken?
Is it the world’s largest? I have no idea.

I think Archie McPhee is probably perfect for about the 8 and up crowd.  Honestly, I would have found it kind of scary as a little kid, and there are some mildly adult items you might not want to have to explain to a younger child.  When a kid is old enough to think whoopee cushions and giant ears are hilarious, then it’s probably a good time to go.

The store is located at 1300 N 45th St, Seattle, and they are open 7 days a week.  Before you visit, you may want to check out their website for the super secret coupon.  The last time I checked, it was a a coupon for one free tentacle mustache, which you have to admit is at least a little awesome.
