The California Academy Of Sciences In San Francisco

The California Academy of Sciences is a playground of every type of science you can think of.  Paleontology?  Yep.  Astronomy?  Yep.  Oceanography?  Yep.  Entomology?  Yep. Geology?  Also yep.
This tank of Amazon fish can be viewed like this in the aquarium, and can be viewed from above in the Rainforest exhibit right on top of the aquarium.

Want to feel for yourself what the historic San Francisco earthquakes felt like while remaining completely safe?  Want to stand in a room filled with the famous San Francisco fog?  Want to see a huge dinosaur skeleton?  If you are interested in any sort of science, then the California Academy of Sciences is the perfect stop for you in San Francisco.

At five weeks of age, mice were given a lethal dose of intraperitoneal ivermectin (mectox; meda pharma, solna, sweden). It is most effective when you confessedly have no other conditions, and it is one of the most effective treatments for depression. I am not sure what i will be using, but my hair is fine in between my brows, but at the top and on my forehead it looks very thin.

Although the drug can be expensive, it is also a good option in such cases. The California Academy of Sciences is a museum of every type of science you can think of.  Paleontology?  Yep.  Astronomy?  Yep.  Oceanography?   Yep. Geology?  Also yep.  Endocrinology?  Okay, I don’t actually know, but if it’s an -onomy of -ology word, then they probably have it.

The Planetarium

To begin with, they have a planetarium.  My kids were not excited about this until they went to a planetarium show and had their minds blown.  We know all about brown dwarfs now.

The planetarium sits over the Reef Lagoon.

The museum presents several different shows inside the Morrison Planetarium on the 75 foot screen.  If you are interested, you’ll want to pick up free passes from the desk near the planetarium entrance.  On busy days, you’ll want to do this as soon as possible, though the show was by no means full when we were there.  Children must be at least 4 to attend a show in the planetarium, and they say that some shows may not be appropriate for those under 7.

World of Life

The museum also contains an aquarium.  It’s not the largest aquarium I’ve ever been to, but it had lots of cool displays.  There were fish that glowed in the dark, a coral reef, an albino alligator, and a touch tank with plenty of docents to tell you what that squishy thing is.

The aquarium houses many species.

Another large section of the museum is the rainforest exhibit.  This is a multi-story enclosure with tropical fish, lizards, amphibians, plants, birds, bugs, and butterflies.  Following the winding ramp, you up climb up 4 floors from the understory to the canopy.

Since you’ve climbed so high, you might want to go ahead on up to the roof.  There you can take a look at the living roof that makes the entire museum look like a giant hobbit dwelling.  There are nice views from up there as well as displays explaining how the living roof works.

And Still More

So what else do they have?  There is an extensive library area full of natural history books and displays, including some artifacts you can touch.  And what else? There’s the earthquake room, and the fog room. There are displays of huge, colorful crystals, an 87 foot long blue whale skeleton, a Foucault Pendulum, a cross-section of a giant redwood, and pretty much anything else you can think of.  We spent about 2 1/2 hours at the museum and got a look at about 90 percent of what we were most interested in seeing.  You could easily spend the day really taking it in, or make multiple trips to the museum.

Practical Matters

The California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco.

The California Academy of Sciences is located on the east side of Golden Gate Park near the de Young museum and the Shakespeare Garden.  We followed signs to the Music Concourse underground garage.  The number 44 bus makes a stop even closer to the museum, and many buses have stops within walking distance.

My understanding is that the museum can be quite busy on the weekends, but we arrived at about 2:00 on a Tuesday, just as multiple buses of school kids were leaving.  There were no crowds at all after that.  It’s worth knowing that, in general, kids on a field trip have to leave museums by about 1:30 or 2:00 in order to get back to school on time.

Something For Everyone

We enjoyed our time at the museum and would return on another trip.  I think it is a particularly good choice for groups trying to please a lot of different folks.  Preschoolers will enjoy the dinosaur skeleton and the aquarium.  World-weary teens can’t help but be impressed with the planetarium and the earthquake simulation house.  Older folks might enjoy lingering in the Amazon to watch the birds and butterflies.  There’s really something for everyone.
