We wandered into Burma Superstar on a Tuesday at lunchtime.  In minutes we were convinced we’d made a very wise decision.  To begin with, there was pretty much no wait at that time of day.  We were seated right away and greeted by a very friendly waiter who was glad to explain the menu to us and make recommendations.  We listened to his advice, and he did not steer us wrong.

If you aren’t familiar with Burmese cuisine (we weren’t either) it has quite a bit in common with both Thai and Indian food.  For example, if you’re used to the delicious salads at your favorite Thai restaurant, Burma Superstar has salads that seem similar.  They also offered samusas that are very similar to samosas, and a bread called platha that seems related to Indian paratha.  That said, the food had its own unique qualities as well.

The Food

We started off with Ginger Lemonade, Thai Iced Tea, and some appetizers.  The samusas were similar to some we’ve had before that are flat triangles with a crispy, deep-fried outside like a spring roll.  We were on those so fast we didn’t even think to take a picture.  The platha is a fried bread and comes with a coconut dipping sauce that was tasty and very mild.  Our least adventurous eater got another round of this for her lunch.

For our main dish, Justin and I did some plate sharing so we could try more things.  We had the vegetarian Tea Leaf Salad which was pictured at the top of the article.  The most unusual ingredient was the fermented tea leaves which did not have a particularly strong flavor.  It also had nuts, seeds, fried garlic, tomatoes, and jalapeños, and it was mixed right at the table.

Our other entree was the Burmese Style curry with beef.  This was very tender beef that had been slow-cooked in the curry sauce  with  fresh cilantro and plenty of ginger.  It was served with coconut rice and some kind of mint, cabbage salad that was remarkably tasty.  I think we ate everything on both plates.  Two of the kids got Sesame Chicken which they both really liked.  The chicken pieces were crispy and a served in a sweet, tangy sauce.  Theirs also came with the mint and cabbage salad which the kids actually ate willingly.

Having eaten ridiculous quantities of food, we did not indulge in dessert, though we probably would next time.  Burma Superstar was a definite highlight of our  trip, and we plan to go back the next time we are in San Francisco.
