Din Tai Fung At University Village In Seattle-A Family Destination

Watch the food being made while you wait for a table.

I was sold on the idea of Din Tai Fung as a family restaurant before we were even in the door.  You can watch the dumplings and wontons being made while you wait for a table.  If you’ve ever waited for a table with little kids, you know the value of a good distraction.  When the wait is long, they’ll take your number and text you when you’re up. They you can go wandering around University Village, possibly stopping at the playground.  If you don’t want to go anywhere, you can get a copy of the menu and mark your order ahead of time.

The Atmosphere

  • Din Tai Fung, Seattle

The atmosphere is busy and moderately noisy.  You can still hold a conversation, but no one is going to be bothered if your kids drop their silverware or laugh a little too loudly.  On a recent, busy Saturday, there were people of all ages, old and young, more and less fancy.  Some people confidently ate with chopsticks while others fumbled around or used forks.  To me it was an “everybody” sort of place which is high praise from me.

Another kid-pleaser is getting to make your own sauce at the table using soy sauce, vinegar, fresh ginger, and red pepper.  If you don’t already know how, your server can show you.

The Food

The menu is pretty straightforward with descriptions in English and plenty of pictures which makes it easier to order with kids.  We think it’s most fun to eat family style and get to try more things.  Soup dumplings are fun, and kids can try to guess how they get the soup inside the dumpling.  One of our favorite dishes is the vegetable and pork wontons with spicy sauce pictured at the top of the article.  The sauce is delicious.  We tried out the Shanghai rice cakes with chicken this time, and while we liked them fine, I think I’d go back to noodles next time.  Best of all, the food comes pretty quickly, and it’s all tasty and freshly prepared.
