Disney Cruise Assembly Drill Returns

The classic Guest Assembly drill is back on the Disney Cruise Line. (Insert resigned sigh here.) If you took a cruise during the reopening period, you had a different (quicker) experience that avoided having large groups congregating together. Disney Cruise Line is known for its emphasis on safety, and beginning in November 2022 it began bringing back the more traditional Assembly Drill.  Also known by some as the lifeboat, emergency, muster, or evacuation drill, this is an inevitable part of Embarkation Day on your Disney Cruise once again.  Here’s what you need to know:

It is important to remember that these medicines have the potential to cause some very minor allergic reactions, although these reactions are usually mild and self-limiting. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do about it? In addition, prednisone can make you less likely to get pregnant.

1.  You Have To Go

You can’t get out of it.  They take attendance and track you down if you aren’t there. If you have a party member with special needs that make the drill difficult, call the cruise line before your trip or talk to guest services as soon as you board.

2.  You Don’t Need To Wear A Lifejacket

While they advise that you check out the lifejackets in your stateroom to make sure you have what you need, you don’t need to wear them to the drill.  Only crew members will be wearing them.  They will also demonstrate how to put on the lifejackets during the drill.

3.  You Will Need Your Key To The World Card

Crew members will scan these to verify that you are at the drill.  On our most recent cruise they only scanned one per stateroom, but it’s probably a good idea to have your whole party take them.  Your Key To The World card will also have a large letter on it in the lower left corner under Mickey.  That letter is the name of your assembly station.  You’ll need to keep it in mind, but crew members are going to direct you to the correct area, so you don’t have to go scout this out ahead of time.

4.  It’s Usually At 3:45

About 3:15 or so most services on board start to shut down, and you naturally head to your stateroom.  There will be an announcement on your stateroom t.v. that explains what to expect from the Mandatory Guest Assembly Drill, and there will be ship-wide announcements prior to the drill.

While you wait, you can make sure your whole party has their Key To The World cards handy and review the directions on the back of your stateroom door.

5.  Brief Your Group

You can find evacuation instructions on the back of your stateroom door.

If you’ve got kids or other sensitive members in your party, be sure to explain the Assembly Drill to them ahead of time so they don’t think something is actually wrong.  School-age kids will probably be familiar with fire drills and can understand that this is just practice.  If even mentioning safety drills is going to cause a sensitive member of your party to start worrying about the boat sinking, you could try just saying that Mickey needs to make sure that everyone is on the boat before you leave. If someone in your group regularly uses hearing protection to avoid overstimulation, this might be a good time for that.

6.  It’s Pretty Easy

When the alarm begins to sound, you exit your stateroom and look around.  Crew members will direct you where to go.  Sometimes you even get to use stairways that are off-limits for passengers most of the time, and I think that’s kind of fun.

Your assembly station may be on deck, in a restaurant, or even in a theater.  Inside assembly stations are nice because they are climate-controlled, and you may have somewhere to sit.  If you are outside, you may be hot or cold, though you will usually be in the shade and under cover.  On deck, your immediate party will line up with the shortest in the front.  A crew member will scan the cards for each party, and then you stand there while they make a few safety announcements and demonstrate how to put on the lifejackets.  That’s it. It’s probably 15 minutes in all.

7. Be Prepared

Dress for the weather, and consider having something like gum available to keep kids from getting too antsy.  The crew members you will see are from all parts of the ship.  We pass the time trying to identify where crew members work based on the uniforms under their lifejackets.  Servers working in Animator’s Palate that night are particularly easy to spot.

Immediately following the drill, some folks will go to the upper decks to stake out spots for the deck party. You may want to do that as well or just head up to to those decks to enjoy the view.  When you are done with the Assembly Drill, the rest of your Disney Cruise can really start.

Insider Tip:

You can actually head for your assembly station before they sound the alarm. There will be some announcements that precede the alarm. We started toward our assembly station at that point and were by no means the first people there.
