In-N-Out Burger

We visited California for years without ever stopping at In-N-Out Burger.  Then our son heard about it on YouTube and asked to try it out.  One evening as we were leaving the Bay Area and incredibly hungry, we stopped off at In-N-Out in Oakland.  We all got burgers, shakes, and fries.  It was fast, it was hot, and it was exactly what we needed right then.  We powered down the food and then sank back in our seats completely happy.  Now, whenever we’re in California, we have to stop off at least once at an In-N-Out.

Preeclampsia (also known as pregnancy induced hypertension, likewise or pe) occurs during the second or third month of pregnancy when your placenta grows too large. If you’re from someplace like California or Texas where In-N-Out Burgers are common, then you don’t really need a review.  If, like us, you’re from somewhere else, then you should know about In-N-Out so you can take advantage of them when you travel.

So what’s the deal?

In-N-Out Burger is a fast food chain you see all over in California, Texas, Utah, Nevada, etc.  They were started in 1948 and now have over 300 locations last time I looked.  The farthest north are in southern Oregon.

The most remarkable location we ever visited was close to the LAX airport.  They were announcing new orders about every 10 seconds.  There were two people working in the dining area the whole time, several people walking back through the long drive-through line, taking orders, and well over 20 people that I could see working in the kitchen.  I’ve never seen a fast food place do such high volume.

How are they different from other chains?

In-N-Out maintains a little more of the classic 1950’s hamburger drive-in feel.  They don’t make your food until you order it, you get a good value for your money, and you can customize your order. Everything seems like real food, and they focus on service.  I’ve never run into an In-N-Out employee that wasn’t polite, helpful, and efficient.  It is the norm, rather than the exception, to have at least one employee in the dining area, greeting, cleaning, and helping out customers.  They also still wear the little paper hats which is kinda cute.

Overall, it’s kind of like Starbucks. It may not be the best you’ve ever had, but you can count on a good experience.

What can I get?

The menu is pretty straightforward.  You can get burgers, fries, shakes, and beverages.  That’s pretty much it.  They aren’t trying to be everything to everyone. No one is likely to mistake it for health food, but it all seems to be real food and not some plastic substitute.  They even tell you up front how many calories each item has.

Can I customize?

You can get your burger exactly how you want it–within reason.  A burger typically has lettuce, tomato, onions, and spread.  The spread is a whole lot like “special sauce” everywhere which is to say it’s a whole lot like thousand island dressing.  Some people love it, but you don’t have to have it.  I order mine with ketchup and mustard in place of the spread.  Onions are typically fresh slices, but you can get them chopped up or grilled if you like.

As for the fries, I think they’re great when they’re hot, but once they cool off, I can take them or leave them.  I’ve heard that you can order them more well-done if you want really crispy fries.

And what else?

Okay, there is a secret (not so secret) menu at In-N-Out.  The most well-know are probably the Flying Dutchman, and Animal-Style fries.  A Flying Dutchman is basically two burger patties stuck together with two slices of cheese.  No bun.  It just seems messy and devoid of condiments to me, but my son often gets one.  Animal-Style fries are fries served with melted cheese, spread, and grilled onions.  I can kind of see the appeal here, but since I don’t love the spread, I usually stick with regular fries.

Beyond that there are a bunch of different ways to customize an order.  A popular one is to have your patty fried with mustard on it so that the mustard cooks in.  I haven’t tried it yet, but some folks swear by it.  The In-N-Out Burger website even has a page of their not-so-secret menu items.  For instance you can get a grilled cheese or a lettuce-wrapped burger.  Basically, they try to accomodate reasonable requests.

I wouldn’t ever claim that In-N-Out is the best burger out there, or even the best chain burger.  That would require way more research than I have time for, and ultimately, everyone has their own tastes anyway.  If you like burgers and fries, and you’re in the area, In-N-Out is a solid, local option.

  1. I’m born and raised in California, and I honestly don’t know what the hype is with In N Out! I prefer Habit Burger, which started in California but now it has locations in a few other states. In my opinion, Habit is much tastier!

In-N-Out Burger is good. You know that even if you prefer another chain, In-N-Out Burger is going to give you a good meal. Always hot and fresh. It is a solid burger for sure!
