Rotational Dining On A Disney Cruise

The Disney Cruise Line has a system in place so that you get to try all the main dining venues on the ship while being pampered by servers who know all your likes and dislikes. Sound good?  We think so.  It’s called Rotational Dining, and it’s a great part of your Disney Cruise.  Let’s take a look at how it works and what your options are.

How Rotational Dining Works

  • Rotational Dining Disney Cruise

Each of the Disney Cruise ships has three main dining rooms or restaurants.  For example, the Disney Wonder has Tiana’s Place, Triton’s, and Animator’s Palate.  When you receive your Key To The World Card on Embarkation Day, there will be a code on the card to tell you the order of the restaurants you will go to for dinner.  As an example, on a Seven Night Cruise on the Wonder, you might go to Tiana’s Place, Triton’s, Animator’s Palate, then start ’round again with Tiana’s Place, Triton’s, Animator’s Palate, and then have one more dinner at Tiana’s Place.  Don’t worry, the menu will be different each time you go to the restaurant.

Disney Cruise Food

What stays the same, however, is your servers.  They will move with you through all three restaurants.  That means that the assistant server who knows you want ginger ale with lots of ice will be there each night and will have that set up for you.  The server who know that your kids should not be seated next to or directly across from each other lest sibling warfare break out will be there too.  They will get to know you and will be an important part of your dining experience.

Do I have to?

There’s almost nothing you have to do on a Disney Cruise, Rotational Dining, included.  We love eating at the main dining rooms, but if you don’t want to do that, you can eat at Cabanas, the on-deck eateries, or order room service.  Adults can also book a dinner at Palo or Remy for an extra charge.

What about breakfast and lunch?

Breakfast and lunch are not part of Rotational Dining, but you may well see your servers there.  They will often tell you at dinner where they will be working the next day for breakfast or lunch.

On our very first cruise we somehow lost our five-year-old at the buffet (I think we were distracted by shrimp) and by the time we realized it and started to look around, there was our head server, José leading him back to us.  He’d seen us go one way and our kid the other and went to retrieve him.

Breakfast and lunch options usually include Cabanas, the on-deck options by the pools, and room service. You will often find table service dining for breakfast and lunch in one of the main dining areas. Check your Navigator app for that day’s option.

Gratuities

It is customary to give gratuities (tips) to your servers in the main dining rotations.  However, you’ll only do this once, near the end of the cruise, and you can even pay for this ahead of time.  If you don’t prepay or contact guest services to adjust the amount, you will automatically be charged the standard gratuities. For example, on a 3 night sailing, the standard amount for your head server would be $13.50.

Envelopes will be left in your room one night, along with printed receipts. You put the receipts and/or cash in the envelopes and hand them to your servers at dinner the next night. If you have prepaid or gone through guest services, they will get the money whether you remember your envelope or not.

You can prepay by contacting the Disney Cruise Line or your travel agent at least 3 days before your cruise.  Once on board your can pay or adjust the amount by going to the Guest Services desk.  For more information, check out the Disney Cruise Line page.

In our experience, every server we’ve had as part of Rotational Dining on a Disney Cruise has been outstanding and gone out of their way to give us the best possible experience.  They definitely earned their gratuities.  We prepay the standard amount through our travel agent and usually end up adding a bit of cash to their envelopes as well.
