Molbak’s Butterfly Garden is once again open at the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.  Even on a gloomy Northwest “Junuary” day, stepping in the Butterfly Garden looks, smells, and feels like summer.

What is it?

Molbak’s Garden and Home sponsors this season Butterfly exhibit at the Woodland Park Zoo.  Inside a large, arched tent, you’ll find up to 500 butterflies, representing at least 15 North American butterfly species.  You can borrow a guide sheet to help you identify the species you are seeing, and there are experts on hand as well.  A short walk takes you through a small garden area where the butterflies are free to fly, land, and eat as they will.  You even have to watch your step because they sometimes land right in the pathway.  Sometimes they even land on you!

You can get an up-close view of a butterfly chrysalis, and, if you are patient, watch a butterfly emerge.  Nearby there is a drying tree where new butterflies are put before their new wings have dried enough to fly.  After that, butterflies have the run of the exhibit.

Conservation

The displays inside the Butterfly Garden as well at the outdoor Pollinator Patio sponsored by Microsoft teach visitors about how to attract and support butterflies in their own backyards.  Topics include how to choose plants that are that attract and support butterflies at all stages of their lifecycle as well as the danger that pesticides pose to butterflies and other pollinators.

The Scoop

The Molbak’s Butterfly Garden is open seasonally, 9:30 – 6:oo and is included in the price of admission to Woodland Park  zoo.  The outdoor Pollinator Patio is open year-round.  They are located on the West side of the zoo, near the Zoomazium.
