Historic Creek Street In Ketchikan, Alaska

One of the fun things about Ketchikan, Alaska is that the ship may dock right along Front Street. You can walk out on deck and overlook the whole town.  Even if you don’t have a big excursion planned, it’s easy to to stroll off the ship (probably in rain gear) and head out to see the sights.  If you decide to do that, be sure to include historic Creek Street in your walk through Ketchikan.

History of Creek Street

Creek Street in Ketchikan is a boardwalk built right over Ketchikan Creek.  When the area was developed it was too difficult to clear more space for building, so they built structures on pilings, right over the water.  Creek Street was the red-light district, and during prohibition included back-room speakeasies.  Most of the buildings had a trap door installed so that bootleggers could make nighttime deliveries.  They came by water when the tide was high enough to cause the creek to rise.  You can still visit the so-called Married Man’s Trail which was a way for “respectable” customers to come and go discreetly.

Shopping

Today, the more colorful establishments have been replaced by bookstores, gift shops, art galleries, and restaurants.  The shopping includes gemstones, native arts and crafts, locally smoked salmon, and other meats.  You can also get plenty of souvenir items such as t-shirts and wooden toys.  If (when) the weather turns nasty, you will also find rain gear, hats, and fleece jackets.  In spite of packing fairly carefully, we’ve ended up having to buy extra gear here ourselves when a merely overcast day turned to wind gusts and driving rain.

Wildlife

In addition to the shopping, Creek Street is a surprisingly good place to spot wildlife.  Ketchikan Creek is full of salmon in season, and fishing gear can be rented at the Stedman Street bridge at the southern end of Creek Street.  Be sure to buy a fishing license there too and check out the local regulations if you are interested.  You may spot Eagles and seals in the area as well because they come to hunt the salmon.  We’ve seen seals in the water on several of our visits.  Then we walked up past Creek Street to the view the salmon ladder. Upriver, past the salmon ladder, there were more salmon than I’ve ever seen in one place.

Museums

There are several small museums in the vicinity, though we have not visited them.  The Tongass Historical museum is on the opposite side of the creek as well as the replica of the Chief Johnson totem pole.  Dolly’s House Museum and gift shop commemorates Creek Street’s working women.

A Note For Families With Young Kids:

We have taken our kids to Creek Street several times, and it is a very family-friendly tourist spot.  However, kids old enough to read may likely ask why there’s a sign on Dolly’s House saying, “Where both men and salmon came upstream to spawn,” or why there’s a trail through the woods called “Married Man’s Trail.” I just mention it so that you can decide ahead of time if this is appropriate for your family.

Our Take

We head to Creek Street whenever we are in Ketchikan. It is very picturesque and quaint. While it is a tourist destination, it’s feels much more authentic than the ubiquitous fudge and t-shirt shops that tend to crowd around cruise ports. There’s an interesting variety of things for sale, historic buildings, and some wildlife to boot. Creek street is about a 10 minute walk from Front Street where most cruise ships are docked, and just a bit further from the other docks. Rain gear is almost always a good idea when visiting Ketchikan.

  1. We did this in 2015 and it was an usually dry and rather warm day in Ketchikan, I had layered up for the cold and ended up just carrying most of my layers! Haha! I also wanted to comment on your Palo post but it wasn’t giving that option…

    • You were sure lucky with the weather then! I seem to be having technical difficulties today on the other post. Thanks for the comment though!
