Mock Pack vs. Soft Pack

So what’s a mock pack?  It’s when you pack so early that other people mock you.  Okay, maybe not, but I once did a mock pack over a year before the actual trip, and you’d probably be justified in mocking that. A mock pack is actually when you assemble everything early for a trip to make sure you’ve got what you need and that it will fit into your chosen luggage.  It’s also a way to get super excited for your trip and possibly justify a new clothing purchase.  What’s not to love?

Here’s what I do:

1. I start by laying out full outfits for each day and occasion on both sides of my bed. I include shoes and accessories.

2. As I see the outfits coming together,  I start to notice ones that are going to share elements and put them side by side. If both those outfits would look good with the silver sandals, that saves me packing another pair. Instead of packing the blue capris to go with that shirt, I could just wear the denim capris I already have for another outfit.

3. Then I think, “What if it’s colder than I expect?  What if it’s hotter?” and add extras like a tank top or sweater.

4. When I think I’ve got it, I try putting everything in my suitcase. If it fits, I’m golden, and I can start putting all that stuff back away. If it doesn’t, I get it all out again and start making decisions. Can I leave something out? Is there a less-bulky alternative to something I packed?  Should I do laundry on the trip so I can take less?  Should I just get a bigger suitcase and pay for checked baggage?  Then I adjust and repeat the process until I’ve got a workable pack.

5. It would probably be smart to take a picture at this point so I remember what I’ve decided, but honestly, I never do.

Soft Pack

A soft pack, on the other hand, is something you start doing a couple days or even a couple weeks before a trip.  You stick an open suitcase in the corner of your bedroom and start throwing things in it whenever you think of it, possibly remembering what you decided when you did a mock pack.  When your favorite Mickey shirt or your good pajamas come out of the wash, you don’t put them away, you stick them in the suitcase.  This is a good way of making sure that when you do your actual pack, you won’t be stuck with important elements still in the dirty clothes hamper.  The night before the trip, you double check what you’ve got, pack it up, and you’re good to go.

Mock Pack Mania

So why did I once do a mock pack more than a year away from the actual trip?  Well, mainly I was super excited that we were planning our first Disneyland trip after changing from a family of 3 to a family of 5.  I also couldn’t really picture how many suitcases it was going to take and how much gear we would need for two toddlers.

mock pack

I also do a mock pack for cruises.  One example was planning for a Disney Cruise that was a 7 night Mexican Riviera cruise which we had never done before.  Besides our regular cruise casual attire, we needed to pack for a formal night, a semi-formal night, a Palo Brunch, our first Pirate Night, and our first Halloween on the High Seas.  And to top that off, we were flying to the cruise and didn’t want to have more than one checked bag for the whole family.  So, yeah, mock pack.
