Vancouver Aquarium

The Vancouver Aquarium is a favorite stop for us when we are in Vancouver.  They have a strong emphasis on education, conservation, and research, and they have some spectacular creatures on-view.  There are two main reasons that we continue to come back to the aquarium.  The first is that there is just so much to see that it never gets dull.  The second reason is the aquarium employees.  They are very passionate about taking care of the animals (did you know the animals are fed restaurant-quality seafood?) and they are dedicated to guest experience on the level we generally expect from Disney.  They consistently work to interact positively with guests and give them a great experience.

The Exhibits

The inside exhibits include extensive displays of sea-life found locally.  If the octopus starts moving around, it’s well-worth stopping for a look.  A two-story tank forms the centerpiece of the central lobby.  The staircase beside it leads down to an exhibit exploring the question of why frogs are disappearing.  Upstairs is the great Tropic Zone where you can watch sea turtles and sharks swimming as well as lots of colorful fish.  An Amazon River exhibit includes a walk-through aviary with brightly colored birds.  Don’t forget to look up here because there’s also a sloth that roams (slowly) around the treetops.  Nearby are displays of Amazon monkeys, bats, and spiders.  The inside galleries also include a 4D theater and Clownfish Cove which is a learn-through-play area for kids eight and under.

Outside are exhibits of sea otters, sea lions, seals, and penguins.  Some of these are local animals (okay, not the penguins) which were rescued but are not able to be returned to the wild.  Animal feeding times are posted, and they are well-worth attending.  The female sea lions in particular make the most entertaining noises.  Aquarium staff are very knowledgable and are on-hand to answer your questions.

The Food

The Courtyard Cafe provides both indoor and outdoor seating and can be very busy.  It serves standards like hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken strips with a choice of fries or a salad.  It also serves up healthy options like salads or the hummus wrap with grilled vegetables.  Everything we’ve had there has been freshly made and tasty, but you can expect to pay for the convenience of eating on-site.  Important tip:  watch out for the seagulls if you eat outside.  They want your food, and they are sometimes aggressive when they see an opportunity.

Everything Else

The aquarium gift shop is unavoidable on your way out.  It’s really quite extensive.  Besides aquarium toys and keepsakes, they have a variety of Vancouver and Canada-themed t-shirts and souvenirs.

The Vancouver Aquarium is located in Stanley Park and is open every day.  All parking in Staley Park is pay parking.  Be warned that Stanley Park traffic is all one-way and counterclockwise.  Once you’ve gone past a place you have to circle the whole island to get back to it.  We’ve always been able to find a spot by the aquarium, but sometimes we’ve had a bit of a walk.  You can also take a bus, but that involves a little walking too.
