When is it?
On the 7 night cruises we have taken on the Disney Wonder, the Formal Night has usually been on the evening of the first full day of the cruise. This has coincided with the Captain’s Welcome Reception and the presentation of The Golden Mickeys show as the evening’s entertainment.
The Semi-Formal night has taken place on the next-to-last night of the cruise. This may vary by cruise itinerary. Although the cruise documents we received ahead of time didn’t tell us what kind of dress-up nights we’d have or when they would be, I was able to call the cruise line a few weeks ahead. The very helpful cast member told me not only when the Formal and Semi-formal Nights would be, but also when we would have other special nights like Pirate Night and Halloween on the High Seas which was very helpful for planning.
What happens on Formal Night?
The main element is just that you dress up kind of fancy. Because everyone is wearing their best duds, lots of families take pictures that night. Photographers usually have long lines that evening. Arrive early if you want to take advantage of the professional photographers. On our cruises, many people lined up in the atrium to get pictures taken even before 5:00. You can also just ask someone else to snap a few pics on your phone. You may find characters in fancy outfits too which makes for some unique photo opportunities.
Some cruises may have the Captain’s welcome reception that night. This is mostly an excuse to stand in the atrium looking good, chatting with your party, and possibly snagging a complimentary drink.
How formal is formal?
On formal night, you may see men in tuxes and women in full-length evening gowns. You’ll also see people just wearing their regular cruise-casual attire. Most people opt for something in the middle. Many men wear suits or at least suit slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie. Most women wear cocktail dresses or a dressy pants suit. If not formal wear, then it’s at least dressy evening wear.
Kids are all over the map. Little girls are often in very fancy dresses, and tiaras or princess dresses fit in just fine. Boys are sometimes in suits. More often, they just wear pants that aren’t jeans, a button-down shirt, and possibly a clip-on tie.
Semi-Formal night is generally the time to wear your second-best duds. Many guys just opt to lose either the jacket or the tie from their formal night suit. Women are still generally in evening dresses or dressy pants outfits.
Do you have to dress up?
Absolutely not. In this respect, Disney is a lot more laid-back than some cruise ships. Cruise-casual attire is fine in all the main dining rooms every night. If you have booked a meal at Palo or Remy, you will need to dress up for that on any night, but dressing up for Formal Night is optional. That being said, I would have felt out of place not dressing up a bit for the Formal and Semi-Formal nights. If you don’t feel like dressing up and don’t want to feel out of place, you could opt to skip the main dining rooms that night. You could eat at Cabanas, the on-deck eateries, or order room service.
While you don’t have to dress up, some people find it fun. For kids in particular, this can be a rare opportunity to spruce up a bit. Planning out their formal night outfits is an exciting part of the run-up to the cruise for our kids.
How do you pack for that?
Packing for these nights can be tricky, perhaps more so for guys than women. Men’s suits take up a lot of space and don’t come out of the suitcase looking all crisp and ready to go. We have resigned ourselves to taking one checked hanging bag that holds the guys’ suits and the girls’ dresses. When we have access to the staterooms the first day, we hang everything up right away. Generally, the worst wrinkles are gone by the next day, and we can touch up the rest with the iron provided in one of the laundry rooms. (Please note that you cannot have an iron in your room.) If your suit is a hopeless mass of wrinkles, both dry cleaning and pressing services are available on the ship, though you want to jump on that as early as possible.
Women’s dresses can be a bit more forgiving and may take up a lot less space, depending what you choose to pack. I have a black dress that you can cram into a small space, and when you pull it out is just good to go. On our Mexican Riviera cruise I wore the same dress for both the Formal and Semi-Formal nights, but I changed up the accessories: handbag and statement necklace one night, evening wrap and sparkly earrings the other. I also just wore my metallic sandals that went with several other outfits.
Disney allows each passenger two checked bags in addition to the day bag you carry on yourself. How carefully you have to pack may depend on whether you are flying and how much you are willing to pay for checked bags on your airline.
Getting Ready
Formal Night and Semi-Formal night often take place during a day spent at-sea. Many kids (and some adults) will have spent the whole day in the pool or water play areas. It’s worth mentioning that you should allow time to shower and possibly blow-dry before the kids don their finery. Any of the dress-up nights would be an excellent time for little kids to visit the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. However, you’ll want to get the timing just right so your prince or princess doesn’t miss out on any of the fun.
