Emerald City Comic Con Part 1

What Is It?

Emerald City Comic Con started in 2003 with 2,500 people in attendance. In 2019 there were 98,000 attendees. It’s grown so much that it now takes over the Seattle Convention Center and surrounding buildings for 4 days. But what is it? The name suggests that it would be all about comic books. Comic books are certainly well represented at Comic Con, but basically anything sci-fi, fantasy, or pop culture may be found there. Picture Princess Lea and a Hobbit engaged in table-top gaming. Picture Moana browsing through Lego creations and Harry Potter buying chocolates shaped like a Tardis. In short, it’s Geektopia.

The Costumes

Many people at the Con will be in costume. There are cosplay meetups and specific areas set aside for cosplay pictures. There is even a room just for costume repairs. Every Con has Star Trek bridge officers, Doctor Who characters, Sailor moon, superheroes, and Disney princesses.

There will also be costumes for current, popular shows or games such as Eleven from Stranger Things. I even saw a kid dressed as a taco. I have no explanation for that, but he looked like he was having fun. If you don’t come in costume, you will not stand out. Lots of people are just in everyday streetwear. It’s fun to see the costumes, and people are really cool about posing for a picture if you ask. However, you should know that Con etiquette dictates that you always ask first.

Vendors

Artist Alley, Emerald City Comic Con — Artist Alley

There are a number of vendor exhibition areas including Artist’s Alley, Musicalley and Writer’s Block. Not only can you shop for fan paraphernalia and other products, you can often talk to the artists and makers themselves. Besides having products to sell at the Con, many vendors have an online presence where they may have more product availability. If you like an artist or vendor, it’s a good idea to pick up a business card.

Events

The Con also has many scheduled events such as screenings of upcoming movies, panels, and signings. Panels can be anything from learning sewing techniques for your next Comic Con costume to a serious discussion of gender roles in comic books led by popular artists in the industry. There are panels aimed at pretty much any interest.

Family HQ

Family HQ is an area aimed at kids and is located significantly away from the main Con attractions. It is generally a quieter and less crowded part of the convention, though still full of things to do and see. It includes many photo ops with costumed characters such as Storm Troopers and super heroes. There is a large display of Lego creations and even a room for kids to just sit down and play with Legos. Family HQ also has its own panels aimed at kids such as how to draw dinosaurs and martial arts demonstrations. There’s a family break room too.

Shall we play a game?

One of the best parts of the Con is the opportunity to play lots and lots of games. There is essentially an entire floor of the convention center dedicated to hosting gaming of all kinds.

Want to play vintage video games? They’ve got that. Want modern console video games, including new games still in beta? They’ve got that. Tabletop, collectible cards games (a whole room for Magic: The Gathering), role-playing games, collaborative story games, family games, new games in development, how-to introductory sessions, a gaming library that is free to play: they’ve got all of it.

Even more important than having all the games, there are lots of great people who want to play with you. The gaming aspect of Comic Con is one of the biggest draws for our family. There are volunteers and the game creators themselves just waiting to play whatever game you want. If you see somebody playing something that looks interesting, ask if you can join. If they are full, they will be happy to show you where to go to sign up or to find something similar. Only the competitive gaming has an entry fee (Magic or Yu-Gi-Oh tournament games) but everything else is free.
