When it’s time to buy plan your trip to the Disneyland Resort, there are a lot of options. How many days will you go to the parks? Um, as many as possible if you’re me. Should you buy churros? Yes. Do you want to get a Park Hopper ticket? Now this is where it can get tricky.

The Park Hopper option is the ability to move back and forth between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park on the same day. Do you want to do that? Do you need to do that? Is it worth the price? Let’s look at the pros and cons.
Cons
Price
It costs $60 more to get a Park Hopper ticket. That’s $60 more on a 1 day ticket, and $60 more on a multi-day ticket. That’s $60 more for the whole length of ticket, not per day. I don’t know about you, but I could enjoy a pretty nice meal for $60. If you’re traveling with a large group, that money adds up pretty quickly.
Time
It’s not far from the entrance of Disneyland Park to the entrance of Disney California Adventure. They face each other across the Esplanade, and there are no additional security lines to deal with after you’ve entered the Esplanade. However, it has taken people over an hour at times to park hop. There’s often a crowd to deal with as you leave one park and lines to deal with as you enter the other park. Typically, the time from turnstile to turnstile will be closer to 10 minutes, but it’s not nothing.
New Limits And Uncertainty
It used to be that if you paid for the Park Hopper option you could just hop whenever you felt like it. The new rule is that you can hop after 1:00 p.m. if there’s availability in the other park. For example, you might have reservations for Disneyland Park and start your day there. You try to park hop over to to California Adventure at 1:00 only to get turned away at the gate because California Adventure is already at capacity. Now, you’re not completely out of luck, because you can always just go back to the park you started at. You still have your reservation there for the day even though you left the park. The bummer is that you paid for access you’re not getting.
In practice though, this isn’t happening very much. People who paid for the Park Hopper are almost always able to hop to the other park. Particularly busy times are obviously the biggest risk for this since the parks will run near or at capacity.
Second-Guessing
If you know you have Park Hopper tickets, you may tend to second guess your choices and spend too much time trying to optimize your experience. If you see low wait times in the other park, you may feel the need to hop over to the other park. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it could eat up your time and put some wear and tear on your feet. If you’re a person who obsesses over details, then getting a one-park-per-day ticket may simple things up for you.
Pros
One Day Blitz
If you’ve only got one day in the parks and you want to hit all your favorites, the Park Hopper lets you do that. While it might not be everyone’s idea of perfect vacation, it might be a really fantastic day. The Park Hopper means you don’t have to choose between the Incredicoaster and Space Mountain. Sweet!
Flexibility
If you want to ride Space Mountain in the morning then run over to do the Grizzly River Run when it gets hot, you’ll need the Park Hopper option. If you want dinner at Flo’s and dessert at the Jolly Holiday Bakery, you’ll need it then too. The Park Hopper option lets you go wherever your whimsy takes you. Mostly.
This flexibility can also been important because you may have your park reservations made long before you can make advance dining reservations. For an upcoming trip I managed to snag a coveted reservation for Oga’s Canteen only to realize I had park reservations for Disney California Adventure that day. It’s okay though because my reservations are for after 1:00, and I will likely be able to park hop over to Disneyland in time for my reservation.
It’s Close!
Unlike at Walt Disney World, the two parks of the Disneyland Resort are very close to one another. On a good day, you could easily walk from Main Street in Disneyland to Buena Vista Street in California Adventure in ten minutes. You don’t even have to go through security again.
Is It Worth It?
So is it worth it to buy the Park Hopper option when you go to Disneyland? Would you rather park hop or have 13 churros? Would you rather buy a 3 day Park Hopper for $390 or a 4 day 1 Park Per Day ticket for $360? Obviously, these are personal choices that depend on your circumstances, budget, and preferences. We usually end up thinking the Park Hopper is worth it to us for our trips to Disneyland. Whichever option you go with, you’re probably going to have a great time.
