Juneau Street Food

I wasn’t really expecting to find a taco truck in Juneau, Alaska, but we had a teenage eating machine with us. His instincts are finely honed, and if there’s street food within a 6 block radius, he will find it. And he did.

This course is unique for it combines the traditional, old-fashioned, lecture. The Set Up

Fish Tacos, Juneau

We were headed down South Franklin street on our walking tour of Juneau and opposite the Doll museum when we spotted Deckhand Dave’s Fish Tacos. The truck was parked in the outdoor Franklin Food Court with some semi-permanent structures including a stand shaped like a boat that sold beer and other beverages. There was plenty of outdoor seating, some of it under cover. Of course we stopped.

Deckhand Dave’s Menu

While you might not expect tacos in Juneau, when you realize that they are fish tacos, it makes a lot more sense. Aidan still claims (with a wistful longing) that these are the best fish tacos he has ever had, and he has sampled quite a few both before and since.

You can choose from salmon, halibut, and rock fish for your tacos, or you can get the sampler and try all three. Aidan went for the sampler. I’d like to be able to give you my personal take, but I didn’t get the chance taste them. He powered down all three with great enthusiasm. I think it was the combination of fresh local fish, crisp cabbage, and a really tasty sauce that made these such a standout.

Prices were completely reasonable for a tourist meal in Alaska. The 3 taco sampler was about $15. This was perfect for a teen or other hungry adult. Two adults could split this along with a side or two for a light meal. Fish and chips ran from $16 to $25, depending what type of fish you choose, and they were served with beer batter fries and their homemade tartar sauce. There was a huge family feast with an abundance of fish tacos and fish and chips available for $100. Deckhand Dave’s also served a halibut cake for $4 and beer batter fries for $5. For $7 you could get something called Salmon Tots that I can’t believe we missed. Obviously, menu and pricing may change over time.

And Then…

And then to round out our Juneau street food experience, we found the Coppa ice cream stand that sold candied salmon ice cream. I’m not kidding. I know you will doubt both my sanity and my sense of taste here, but it wasn’t bad. No really. It was like a butter brickle flavor but with fish. I’m not really selling it, am I? I thought it was fine, and the guys liked it a lot. If we bring it up with people, they are quick to say, “No, it was actually really good!” I’m going to suggest that if you find this in Juneau, you should try it just for the novelty factor. Think of it as a conversation starter if nothing else.

If I haven’t convinced you to try fish ice cream, they had other flavors too. These ranged from the standard vanilla bean, to the more adventurous spruce tip. Personally, I’m disappointed that I didn’t try the rhubarb sorbet. Next time.

  1. « Teenage eating machine » – loved that term. It reminded me of when a friend’s two teenage boys stayed with me for two weeks and ate me out of house and home. They had hollow legs. Those tacos look delicious.
