There are basically two types of scary rides at Disney. Understanding those two types can help you pick the rides that will be fun for everyone in your party. It can also help you add new rides to a cautious rider’s repertoire.

1. Physically Scary

If rides are physically scary, then they are fast, high, have sudden movements, spin, go upside down, or maybe all of those at once. A classic example of this type of ride is a roller coaster.

2. Scary Atmosphere

Rides with a scary atmosphere may be dark, loud, have surprises, or deal with scary images and themes. Kids are often more sensitive to some of these than adults. The classic example here is a haunted house.

Of course rides can have both kinds of scary at once. The Indiana Jones Adventure is a great example of that. It’s fast with sudden movements. It’s also dark, full of skeletons, bugs, and a huge snake that tries to eat you.

And the X factor…

Sometimes you can’t predict what will freak someone out, especially little kids. A child I know was afraid of the Winnie the Pooh Ride. Apparently it was the Heffalumps and Woozles. Not something I would have predicted.

So how does this help?

To begin with, it helps to understand that rides aren’t just scary or not. My kid who hates the Indiana Jones Adventure loves the Incredicoaster. I’m the exact opposite. To me, the Incredicoaster is clearly way more scary. However, when we were at Universal Studios Hollywood, we were able to predict that neither of us wanted to ride The Mummy which is a roller coaster with a scary atmosphere. We happily sat that one out together.

If you know enough about the park rides and the people in your group, you can figure out which rides are likely to work and which aren’t. Some of this can be done ahead of time. Some you will figure out on-the-fly in park. If Uncle Joe hates heights, you probably don’t want to push him onto the Icredicoaster, but Big Thunder Mountain might work. If your child thought the Haunted Mansion was great, then Pirates of the Caribbean is likely to be okay too.

Be prepared!

If you aren’t familiar with many of the rides, then you may want to do some research. There are tons of ride-through videos on YouTube for all the park attractions. Watching them will help you figure out what kinds of scary the ride has so you can help your group make decisions.

Watching ride videos can also help more cautious riders try more rides. Kids are usually nervous approaching the Haunted Mansion for the first time, but it you’ve watched the ride videos and know what to expect, that’s a whole different experience.

Disneyland Resort’s website also provides some good information such as which rides are dark or loud. If a ride has a height requirement, that’s almost alway an indicator that it will be at least physically scary.

• Astro Orbiter—This looks tame until you’re on it. Then it’s way higher and faster, and you think you’re going to fly out of it, or maybe that’s just me.
• Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride—You get run over by train and have an undesirable afterlife experience.
• The Jungle Cruise. More than one kid has seriously worried about the hippos blowing bubbles and wiggling their ears, and then the driver suddenly uses a cap gun.
