Non-Swinging
The Pixar Pal-A-Round looks like a Ferris Wheel. If you ride one of the non-swinging gondolas, you’ll get a regular Ferris Wheel ride. It’s high enough that it really messes with my fear of heights too, but I ride it anyway for the spectacular views. Not only can you see for miles around, but you can get a good view of any construction projects going on in the park as well. A word to the wise: it can get pretty breezy up there at the top, and I’ve regretted not having a sweatshirt on this ride more than once.
Swinging
Now, if you ‘d like more of a thrill ride, you can try the swinging gondolas on the Pixar Pal-A-Round. Instead of being fixed to one point at the edge of the wheel, they run on tracks that are shaped like elongated ovals stretching toward the center of the wheel. Every time the wheel turns, your gondola whizzes along the track and then swings like crazy. It’s the only ride in California Adventure that provides barf bags which may give an indication of what it’s like.
So how scary is that? I am way too much of a chicken to be able to answer that question. I’d be willing to try it if I could call it off if it’s too much, but you’re pretty much stuck for the whole ride. Everyone else in my family has ridden it, and they say vague things like, “It’s kind of scary, but it’s fun.” However, the last time we rode it, two of them chose the swinging side, and two chose to ride with me on the non-swinging gondolas, so maybe the scary outweighs the fun. I may never know.

I’ve been going to California Adventure since it opened and I’ve never been on the ride. My husband is afraid of heights and I didn’t want to ride it enough to go alone. I think if I ever do get on, I’ll try the non-swinging one first. If I can handle it, then I would try the other one.
I’ve got a theory that I could handle the non-swinging because they don’t actually go as high since they slide down to the middle. My family assures me it would scare me silly.

So I love roller coasters and thrill rides but I took my 4 year old and 21 month old on the swinging one without realizing I’d have to hold us all into the seat as we almost fell out. It was absolutely terrifying. Especially when my son was laughing and attempting to stand on the seat. I just wanted it to end.
