1. Kid-Friendly Outings

In most cities you will find at least one of the following:  zoo, aquarium, children’s museum, amusement park, beach, science museum, playground, pool, toy store, movie theater, roller rink, petting zoo, book store, ice cream, or frozen yogurt shop.  A local library or a pet store would work too, and remember that to younger kids, even public transportation may be cool.  We’ve gone to numerous local playgrounds on our travels.  It didn’t matter that some of them were not particularly special.  The important thing was that they weren’t the ones we were already used to at home.  Some (like Ceperley Park) even had fantastic views for the parents to enjoy while the kids climbed the monkey bars.

2. Prep Work

Kids are not always thrilled with sightseeing, but they are more likely to get excited about places they already know about.  My kids were craning their necks to get a view of Alcatraz Island because it was a “famous” place that they had heard of.  Coit tower?  Meh.  Never heard of it.  A little prep work can get kids excited about a destination and help you pick places you both want to go.

3. Accommodations

Some hotels are way more kid-friendly than others.  When you travel with kids, be on the lookout for things that will make the stay easy for you and fun for your kids. Things to look for: bunk beds (if your kids are old enough) pools, other recreation and, of course, free cookies.

4. Schedule

Try not to get wildly off your family’s sleep schedule, especially if naps are still important.  Make sure food is available about the time your kids get hungry.  A single package of fishy crackers at a crucial moment can save the day.

5. The Papa Principle

My dad (now Papa to my kids) took us on epic cross-country road trips growing up, and we generally enjoyed them.  He scoured the AAA guidebooks to find something-anything– kid friendly for every single day.  One time it was a slight detour to a park that had giant concrete dinosaurs.  Another time it was a trip to an ice cream parlor where we all got sundaes–not single scoop cones like at home–actual sundaes.  When I remarked on my good fortune, my mom explained that Dad hadn’t been able to find anything else fun for that day, so we got ice cream.
