1. Prepare For Your Trip
If you’ve booked your Disney Cruise, then you have probably been on the My Disney Cruise section of the Disney Cruise Line Website. Once you’ve downloaded the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App on a mobile device, you can sign in with the same username and password that you use on the website. Your stateroom information and plans should then be visible to you on the app.
At this point, you can basically do anything you could do on the My Disney Cruise site. You can check on your payment balance. You can complete online check-in, and make special requests. The app even lets you reserve cruise activities and port adventures. Personally, I’d rather just do this on my computer where I’m not trying to type on a tiny screen. However, I appreciate that I could do these things on my phone if it was more convenient for me.
My favorite feature of the app that’s available before the cruise is actually the countdown. It’s got a cute little cruise ship at the bottom, and it actually counts down the seconds until the cruise-just like I do. Whenever my kids ask how many more days until the cruise, I whip out the app and show them.
2. Find Activities And Information While On Board
When you come aboard the ship on embarkation day, you will want to sign in to the Disney Cruise Guest Wifi (DCL-GUEST.) Then, sign up for the free and very limited wifi package. If you want to use the wifi for more than just the Navigator app, you’ll need a paid plan. Be advised that those are expensive. However, using onboard wifi for the Navigator app is free.
It used to be that every day on the cruise you would get a paper copy of the Personal Navigator that showed the schedule of events, character greetings, etc. Increasingly, those are available only at the Guest Services desk, or if you request to have them delivered to you room. The paper copy is good for getting an idea of the day ahead, but the Navigator App has all of that schedule information too. It also allows you to search in different ways such as by age category.
One of my favorite uses for the Navigator app while on board is to peruse the dinner menus for the night. Menus for all the main dining areas are included, and they show all the options, right down to special cocktails and the type of bread being served that night.
3. Text Other Passengers For Free
A cruise ship is a curiously tech-unfriendly place. Your phone will probably not have any reception, and if it does, you will likely be outside your plan area. Wifi costs a lot too, so you’re sort of out of touch with the rest of the world. Some people (like Justin) see this as a plus. However, you’ll probably want to be able to communicate with the other people in your party. Disney does provide two Wave Phones in each cabin, but they have kind of a late 90’s feel to them, and are not especially intuitive to use.
The Disney Cruise Line Navigator App comes to the rescue. It provides you with a way to text other passengers for free while on board. Every passenger with a phone can get a unique code to share with friends. We usually take care of this over lunch when we first come aboard. We immediately start texting each other the cute Disney Emojis available while using the app. I’m told that the kids’ clubs staff can now send you text messages through the app as well. On our last sailing, our immediate family had just one account that we could all log in to from each phone. We were still able to have separate texting accounts.
In the past, we encountered a few problems using the app for texting. If we weren’t in the app, we didn’t always get a notification that a text had come through. However, this problem seems to be fixed, and overall we found the app to be very handy.
