1. Convenience
The lower station of the Mount Roberts Tramway is right at the cruise ship terminal. If your ship is docked at one of the further locations, there will likely be a shuttle bus that will drop you off a few steps away from the tramway. If you are coming from downtown, it’s just a short walk down South Franklin Street. It’s hard to miss, considering you can see exactly where the cables go.
Tickets can be purchased right there at the tramway station or as an excursion through your cruise ship. Purchasing on site means that you can change your mind if you find the weather too discouraging.
2. Wow Factor
You’re at sea level, and then suddenly you are sweeping up the mountain. The views are fantastic. You can see your cruise ship, Douglas Island, downtown Juneau, and Gastineau Channel. In minutes you get to the top, and the views are still amazing, and you feel like you are a world away from where you started. Awesome, right?
Now, I have a fear of heights, and I was worried that the “Wow!” would be more like “Yikes!” It turned out that the height didn’t bother me. The ride was very smooth and seemed basically to skim over the treetops. This gave me the illusion that I wasn’t really that high up. This doesn’t actually make sense, but it’s an irrational fear anyway, so I just went with it. My other vertically-cautious family member did fine on the tramway as well.
3. Value
This is completely debatable, because at $50 apiece for adults and $35 for kids 3-12 (ages 2 and under free) the cost can add up pretty quickly. However, I feel it’s a good value for two reasons:
First, have you seen the price for activities and excursions in Alaska? I’ve seen excursions that just drive you the 25 minutes or so to Mendenhall glacier that want to charge $75 per person round trip with no flexibility in the schedule. This is much less. Your ticket to the tramway is also valid all day, and you can return as often as you want. If it’s foggy in the morning, you can alway make a second trip up the mountain later in day. If you’ve got a kid who’s obsessed with transportation, ride up and back all day if you want to.
Second, you’re not just paying for the short tram ride. You’re paying for quick, convenient access to the view, the trails, the exhibits, and facilities. You can be chowing down on the cruise ship breakfast buffet, and then 30 minutes later find yourself wandering the wilderness trails and spotting bald eagles. Your time in Juneau is probably pretty limited, and the tramway makes good use of that.
4. Accessibility
If your traveling party includes folks with limited mobility (or toddlers who are infinitely mobile and yet want to be carried everywhere) it’s hard to find an immersive wilderness experience that is accessible to everyone. While not all of the trails are for every hiker, there are plenty of short, easy trails as well as a handicap-accessible trail. The nature center and the Chilkat Theater can be easy accessed as well.
5. Natural Beauty
There’s no denying that it’s a lovely place. Besides the views, there are trails that wind through trees and meadows. There are delicate wildflowers. We came to Mount Roberts on a misty morning, and it was lovely to watch the fog shifting, changing the view. We’ve also been there on a sunny afternoon. There were no freeway noises. It was calm and peaceful. It’s basically what you came to Alaska to experience.
6. Wildlife
We saw some Bald Eagles, some squirrels, and other birds. We hiked up to a spot where people often see bears, but we didn’t luck out. Possibly that’s because our group tromps along like a herd of rhinos and we scared off all the wildlife within a 3 mile radius, but in theory you might see some interesting wildlife.
There are displays outside and in the Nature Center to teach kids (and you) about local animals, and we all had to take a turn comparing our “wingspans” to that of a Bald Eagle. At the time we were there, there was a rescued Bald Eagle that couldn’t be returned to the wild, so we got some close-up views as well.
7. Native Culture
The Chilkat Theater shows a short documentary about Tlingat culture and history hosted by a cultural guardian. Sometimes there are live music performances as well. The Raven Eagle Gifts and Gallery sells Tlingat art and collectibles. There are small souvenirs as well as larger items like a 6 foot totem pole. You may get to watch local Tlingat artists working on jewelry or carvings.
Our Take
We’ve chosen the Mount Roberts Tramway three times when we were in Juneau. Each time we’ve spent about two hours, though you could easily spend longer, depending on your interests, stamina, and the weather. It’s fast and accessible. Additionally, there are both indoor and outdoor activities which is a bonus with Alaskan weather.
The Tramway is generally open from early May until Late September. Hours or operation may vary, but if there’s a cruise ship in port, then they are probably open.
