World of Color is Disney California Adventure’s big nighttime spectacular. Normally you need to line up early for your chosen viewing area. When you are let into the area you need to stampede (not really but kind of) to your desired location and defend it from everyone else who’s trying to jockey for that position too. After that you have to stand there until the show starts and stand there all through the show. If that seems less than optimally magical, we’re right there with you. That’s why we’ve attended the World of Color Dessert Party multiple times.

The Set Up
For the Dessert Party, we arrived at 7:30 for our 8:00 reservation. The waiting area has moved from previous years. You walk down the street between the Little Mermaid ride and Embarcadero gifts toward the Grizzle River area. When you reach the intersection there will be restrooms on the right, and a check-in podium straight ahead. There were already a bunch of people waiting, but since the point for me was to avoid standing around waiting in line, I don’t think I would arrive any earlier. They checked everyone in, assigned tables, and then gave us a time to return. We wandered around a bit, and returned at the appointed time. They led multiple groups of people over to the seating area at a time.
The seating area has a line of regular tables and chairs in the front and a line of higher tables and chairs in the back. I’ve been seated at both and I don’t honestly think it makes any difference. I asked one of the cast members, and he said he thinks the high tables are better.
Our group of 5 was accommodated at one table. When I’ve been in a group of 2, we were automatically combined with another party of 2. This wasn’t a big deal, but it’s worth knowing that can happen, especially if you are planning a romantic evening.
The Treats
After we were seated, they took our drinks orders. Cocoa, coffee, tea, water, Coke, Sprite, and Diet Coke were available for all. Adults were also offered sparkling wine, beer, or a rum punch. This year’s drink was called a Mistletoe. You could definitely taste the rum, but it wasn’t strong.
When the treats arrived, it was happy fun-times for all. In the past there was a bread basket, but they have scaled that back to some packaged crackers to eat with the cheese. I identified a mini brie and some cheddar, but I couldn’t place the white cheese. These were served with a generous amount of grapes. And then there are the desserts! Since we were there during the holidays there were some holiday yummies like a miniature Pumpkin Spice Bundt cake, a peppermint Mickey Krispie, and a gingerbread macaron. There was also a Raspberry-filled shortbread cookie that I just loved, and a triple chocolate cheesecake.
None of us was able to eat everything on the plate, and at the end of the performance, our server brought us boxes to take our leftovers back to the hotel. For this reason, I wouldn’t suggest doing the dessert party on your last night if it will be hard to take treats home with you. I could have happily nibbled away for several nights.
We were well into the snacking when the performance began. We had an excellent view and could easily see everything. After a long day in the park, we were very glad to be sitting. It was, however, rather cold. I enjoyed the hot tea I asked for before the performance, and I was glad I’d brought some hand warmers. Even in warmer weather I would probably bring a jacket.
The Show
As for the show itself, we definitely enjoyed it. Since it was December all three times I attended, I have only seen World of Color-Season of Light. This is very fun and festive as well as unexpectedly peaceful. Some parts were fun and silly, and there was a section of music from The Nutcracker that was downright frenzied, but the show ended with Let There Be Peace on Earth which is very grand, but calm.
That said, I don’t feel like I need to see any version of the show again anytime soon. The projections are fun, but they’re just clips from Disney movies we could watch at home. There’s only so much I need to see of colored lights on moving water jets. There are definitely people who love the World of Color and would be happy to see it again and again. I have no problem with that, but I would rather get in one more ride on Radiator Springs Racers.
Our Thoughts
So was it worth it? The Dessert Party costs $89 per person on top of whatever you paid to get in the park. For us, that’s definitely a splurge. It was worth it for us to see the show in a stress-free, comfortable way. Unless something completely changes about the World of Color format, I don’t think I’d need to see it again in the next decade. However, if I do see it again, I’ll wait until I have the money to spring for the Dessert Party.
If you do plan to attend the dessert party, prepare for the fact that it might be cold and it might be wet. I attended in December, so it’s not surprising that it was chilly for us, but even during other parts of the year, the temperature can drop significantly after dark. The shorts and t-shirt that worked just fine all day may not cut it when you are sitting outside for over an hour.

Interesting! I’ve only ever done one dessert party but it was at Disney World’s EPCOT when Illuminations was still around. I enjoyed it but I’m not sure I’d ever do one again once fireworks come back to Disney World.
I’ve heard about that one. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle the dessert parties when the big shows return.
Shandale, I think the World of Color Dessert Party beats the Epcot one hands down! It feels much more exclusive and the view of World of Color can’t be beat. We’ve done it three times now. If you get the chance, I highly recommend it. -Andrea
I’ve never been to Disney in the US so wouldn’t know about this but it sounds like a good evening although it definitely is a splurge!
Definitely a splurge for us!
Great article! To date, it’s been our favorite dessert party that we’ve tried. I highly recommend it! Thanks for the great review! -Andrea
Thank you! In 2002 we did the Fantasmic Dessert party when it was held on a balcony in New Orleans Square. The desserts were lovely and served buffet style on real plates. There were maybe 30 people in all. Now that was memorable!
